No sir!
JOKE-OGRAPHY:
In this Bible story (Matthew 4:12-17), Jesus has returned from being tempted in the desert. When He hears that His cousin, John the Baptist, has been arrested, He heads to Capernaum -- "to the lands of Zebulun and Naphtali" (the first two tribes of Israel to be scattered by foreign conquerors). Here, where the first of Israel's exiled tribes were scattered, Jesus begins His public ministry and calls the first of His twelve apostles. The kingdom of God, the recovery of the twelve tribes, the extension of God's covenant to the gentiles, and the exodus to the heavenly Jerusalem all begin here as Jesus preaches, "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!"
In this cartoon, Jesus preaches, "Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!" just like in the Bible story. Unlike the Bible story, we get to see some members of His audience commenting on His words. One old and frail-minded gentleman takes issue with the word "repent." "Repent" is a base verb that means "regret" or "turn back." However, the old man assumes the "re-" part of "repent" is a prefix (re = do again), and so he assumes the "pent" part is the verb, and that Jesus is saying they have to "re-pent" (as in "pent again"). However, "pent" is not a verb (in English, at least), and so this makes no sense. In the final panel, a second, even frailer-mindeder gentlemen appears to enforce the misunderstanding of the first. For those who might be confused, despite the fact that two people are wrong in the same way, their misunderstanding remains wrong, and now they will both face the consequences.
AUTHOR'S NOTE:
As a special note, a friend of mine is getting married this weekend, so I'd appreciate if you could offer prayers for him and his bride-to-be. He's an organized, devoted, and all around godly guy, and when I was still scribbling my Bible cartoons on the whiteboards at college, he was also the one who originally suggested the name "Tomics" for them. Ah, how time flies. Anyway, prayers for him would be wonderful, and if anyone has any other prayer intentions they'd like to share, feel free to comment here or message me and we'll all pray for each other!
