So... when writing an ISTJ, what should I keep in mind? heavier on the writing advice. thank you for everything you do. (also pls if you have the time, the same for ESFP, INFP, and the xSFJs)
Ok so this is going to be an all-encompassing answer, when it comes to writing you need to research something, so if it's not the MBTI types themselves or if looking at MBTI types themselves is too difficult what you're gonna wanna do is look at other fictional characters that are that type alongside it. In order to write a good story, research must be done usually to a heavier degree than a lesser one. Also, keep in mind that stories often borrow from one another and a lot of stories tend to follow the thing known as "The Heros Journey."
Now with that being said, this is going to require you to find fictional characters that are related to each type, there are good sources and there are questionable sources, some get it right and some get it horribly wrong... like saying Twilight Sparkle is an INFP, INTP or INTJ... for example, all of those are wrong. So generally what you're gonna wanna do is a lot and I mean a lot of cross-referencing to find the sources you trust for me I usually use fictionalcharactermbti here on Tumblr as she often has the most accurate at least to myself fictional character MBTI types, she is the one I resonate with the most when it comes to typing characters, others use funkymbtifiction but I have my doubts about some of her typing but I will use her typings to cross-reference when I need to.
The reason why I am telling you to look into the fictional characters that represent various MBTI types alongside studying more on MBTI types itself is that it will allow you to find patterns. These patterns will then repeat in characters of the same type usually over and over again and it is those patterns that one would be able to then inject into their own characters, the repeating patterns of those types that is. Now often, the healthier a character is the harder it gets to type them, as it's usually by their unhealthy side whether it be a loop or more often than not a grip that allows a person to spot them easily, but those aren't needed in order to spot them. Like I said you're looking for patterns that ISTJ characters all have, you're looking for patterns that ESFP characters have, you're looking for patterns that INFP characters have and then you're taking those traits and patterns and implementing them in your own way into your characters.
For example, an ISTJ is often going to have places where they like to frequent, usually aren't very willing to go to new places unless they either have to or they're with someone and then they try that place or thing and then they decide where they want to put it into their routine. This is something common with ISFJs as well both ISFJs and ISTJs have a routine that they keep to, habits if you will. It's not that they're averse to new things, situations, and places, they just need time to mull it over to see whether it is something they want to implement or not. Knowing how Si works, will let you know that those who share a dominant function will often act similarly to each other which is why it sometimes can be hard to tell them apart from time to time.
To sum up each of the functions in one word it would be.
Fi - Identity
Si - Routine
Ni - Future
Ti - Patterns
Fe - Society
Se - Pleasure
Ne - Ideas
Te - Goals
Now obviously there's going to be a lot more to each of those functions, and more words can be given to them, but if you need a place to start those words should help you out. Then when you combine them, in the case of say an ISTJ since that's the main question here you would go: Routine, Goals, Identity, Ideas. Then when you break that down you can go something like this, ISTJ character has a routine that he uses to accomplish his goals that align with his identity until he's thrown into a situation where he has to come up with new ideas or solutions to a problem that goes against his daily order of business. This order of thinking is heavily seen in the movie Stranger than Fiction which is a great movie btw.
Now that is a basic example and it can be expanded upon but that is the idea. You're also gonna need to come up with the, who, what, when, where, and why, along with also how. This is also why I gave the character profile template for people to use to focus on their characters and to keep consistent with their characters. This is the general advice that can be applied to all types that I am giving here, knowing that things can be expanded on, and research is a must no matter what, so I hope this helps.
How Would an ISFJxESFP couple work?
ESFP would likely be the one who asked out the ISFJ, they would probably host a lot of parties or get-togethers. The ESFP would want to try a bunch of new things and would be the more energetic one of the two, depending on the ESFPs love language they would give the ISFJ a lot of it. As for the ISFJ they would help give the ESFP some structure, would be more willing to let the ESFP take the reigns, and at times it would almost feel like the ISFJ was organizing the ESFPs chaos because in a way they would be. The ESFP would bring the ISFJ to try new things, and the ISFJ would help the ESFP slow down a little.
Some couples that represent this relationship are Homer and Marge Simpson, and Gwen and Arthur from BBCs Merlin.
some ESFP characters are: Jack Harkness, Joey Tribbiani, Pippin, Buzz Lightyear, and Finn the Human
some ISFJ characters are: Sam Gamgee, Duchess from the Aristocats, Dr. John Watson, Rory Williams from Dr. Who, Trinity from Matrix, Pumba, and Lady Ranicorn.
