This drabble is for @the-mcu-horniest-book-club 80s Music Drabble Challenge! This is set in my Calendar Girl universe, so Reader is pregnant.
"Peter," you lifted the baking tray, sweat beading on your brow, "open the oven door for me, please?"
The boy moved quickly to help, opening the oven and taking the tray from you so you didn't need to lean over with your growing belly. "I got it! I got it!"
You giggled, letting him take the tray and be the hero for now, setting the timer and then sitting down at the kitchen island and drinking some cold water.
"Time to set up another tray?" Peter asked, bouncing on his heels.
"Yes, very good," you praised, drinking some more. "That one already has the parchment paper set, why don't you try this time?"
He was gleefully dropping spoonfuls on dough onto the tray, watching you for guidance every once in a while. These baking lessons were always a highlight...even though you suspected that it was Bucky's way of making sure you interacted while he was away on missions and didn't hide in your room being hormonal.
"Doing great," you said, making sure to keep an encouraging tone. His spoonfuls were a little big, but perfection in baking was overrated. It was all going to taste good, anyway.
You sat, drinking your water and hoping this hot flash would pass, and when the timer went off you let Peter check the oven. "How do they look?"
"Um..." Peter looked back at you over his shoulder. "They look like they need more time."
"The secret to good baking is under-baking, Peter. Pull 'em." You stayed put, watching him take out the tray and set it on the cooling rack, then slide his next tray into the oven. As you set the timer again, your playlist rolled over to the next song and you hummed in approval.
"Hey, I know this song!" Peter laid a fresh sheet of parchment paper on the tray after sliding the cookies off onto the cooling rack. "It's old."
"Excuse you, Peter Parker!" You teased. "This song is a classic!" He laughed a little as he started spooning the dough onto the tray, and you sang along using your water bottle as a microphone.
"Woah, we're half way there
Take my hand, we'll make it I swear
Woah, livin' on a prayer!"
You remembered singing this song with Sam at a karaoke night, a long time ago, watching Bucky and Steve laugh as you goofed around. This was on the workout mix you'd made for Bucky. It was one of the few songs you could hear him humming along to, and his voice was in your head now.
A sharp pang in your heart made you draw a quick breath.
Where was Bucky? Was he safe? Would you hear from him soon?
Peter's voice snapped you back. "Ugh, Peter. Please don't ma'am me!" You forced a smile, moving the first batch of cookies closer together and swiping one. "Mmm, as official taste tester I proclaim that I told you to take these out at the perfect time."
Peter laughed, taking the next tray out just as the timer went off, not questioning your methods any longer. "I bet Mr. Bucky will be happy to see peanut butter cookies when he gets home."
"He will be happy, Pete. He's always happy to be home."
We've got to hold on to what we've got
It doesn't make a difference if we make it or not
We've got each other and that's a lot for love
Woah, we're half way there
Take my hand, we'll make it I swear
