Virginia turned away from the shelf and thumped the book shut. There were no answers to the questions she would ask, and by the time she found the responses it would be too late for her.

“Machiavelli?”

Darrow had been nearly soundless, but she knew he was there before he had asked the question.

“I wasn’t aware you knew words with so many syllables.”

“Well with the collection of books you have, I had to adapt, and quickly.”

Virginia set the book to the side and strode to Darrow, arms crossed. “How many books did you have? Growing up?”

“We learned to read, but there wasn’t exactly time for such things. Not for Reds. Not on Mars.”

Virginia tilted her head. “Let’s change that.”

A Concept: Darrow gazing up at the sky while he’s on Mercury and watching the stars. After a few moments, his shoulders drop a little and he feels a little less alone, knowing that Virginia is looking up at the same sky as he is.
