So, for last month (May) I read Meg & Linus by Hanna Nowinski. This book would definitely fit into the YA grouping of books. I enjoyed this read, it was rather quick, geeky, and cute. To set the scene Meg is the beloved lesbian and Linus is the shy gay guy. This tells a story of two friends attempting to help each other out in their love lives, while simultaneously trying to start and finish a Star Trek Marathon. In my experience there has been a stereotype that gay guys and lesbians don’t get along because they don’t have anything in common. This book completely throws that stereotype in the trash and has the two main characters are best friends. I also really enjoyed the familiarity that Meg and Linus have with each other. They have the kind of friendship, where at a moments notice they can drop by one another’s house in pjs and just help themselves to coffee/cookies. I found it refreshing that from the beginning of the story both characters were already out. It read to me like a run of the mill teen romantic comedy novel, rather than an angsty coming of age and coming out story. Don’t get me wrong I love a good coming out story. I do love this one almost normalized being on the LGBTQ+ as a teen. I have noticed more and more of these books are coming out as of recently which I am totally jazzed and here for.
