RWBY Weapon Review: Melodic Cudgel
Roman Torchwick was a man who thought he knew exactly who he was and what his role was to play in the world. A man who came from nothing, and rose his way up to become and a skilled thief and leader of the Vale underworld, he eventually found himself embroiled with forces that threatened to change the world… a man who prided himself on being a liar, a thief, a cheater, and survivor, those traits may very well have been what caused his death.
Hello and welcome to RWBY Weapon rEview Wednesday, where I review the weapons from RWBY, and also it’s Wednesday (my dudes). I’m doing them in order of appearance, and this week we’re taking a look at Roman Torchwick’s Melodic Cudgel, which first appeared in the Yellow Trailer.
I will judge the weapon on five criteria: Design, Short Range, Long Range, Mobility, and Versatility. Let’s get into it!
Description Melodic Cudgel is, at first appearance, a regular cane, and it can in an emergency be used as such. However, it is also a gun. The bottom of the cane folds up to reveal the muzzle, and it can fire multiple shots of some kind of explosive blast. The handle of the can can also be fired, attached with a line to act as a grappling hook.
Design I don’t know why, but there’s something that’s just inherently cool about a cane weapon. The design is fairly simple, with the main part of the cane being a steel grey, with a white handle, and some red detailing. I do appreciate that the red bit at the end of the cane kinda looks like Roman’s emblem. 6/10
Short Range Melodic Cudgel is, surprise surprise, a cudgel. Sticks and clubs have been one of humanity’s favorite and most consistent weapons for since the dawn of our kind, so it’s decent. One feature that makes it extra good is the handle, as it lets Roman grapple an opponent’s weapon or limbs to disarm to trip them up. 6/10
Long Range Melodic Cudgel fires explosive flares which pack quite the punch, and despite its slim figure, MC’s got a quite impressive ammo capacity. It also has an impressive range. Plus, even if he’s out of ammo, Roman can use the grappling hook feature to grab people from a distance. Overall, a very solid long range weapon. 8/10
Mobility While we never see him use it this way, the inclusion of a grappling hook would serve to greatly improve Roman’s mobility. Granted, he doesn’t seem like the most agile fighter, so he’d probably use it for escapes (or strategic relocation). 5/10
Versatility Again, for a cane? Pretty solid, all things considered. There’s the obvious application of it as a, well… cudgel, with the addition of a hook for grappling. Add in the ability to fire explosive flares, and the grappling hook feature, and this is pretty well-rounded, especially considering Roman isn’t a huntsman or probably even formally trained fighter, but just some criminal who took water over his head big time. 6/10
Bonus Round! Now, I haven’t read Roman Holiday, but apparently, Roman named his cane Melodic Cudgel because the pained screams of the people he was beating up was like music to his ears… yikes. On a brighter note, Mc is likely based on a type of firework called a roman candle, which is kinda cool. Also, I find it very funny that the wiki lists Mc being very flexible as one of its features, because there was a shot of Roman bending it out of frustration in one chapter XD. I will be rewarding 1 bonus point for all of these fun facts!
Final Score Roman Torchwick’s Melodic Cudgel earns a final score of 32/50!
Surprisingly high, I gotta say. Maybe being a career criminal wasn’t the right choice for Roman, maybe he wouldn’ve made a half-decent huntsman. Well, that path might’ve been closed for him from the start, but still… I think he could’ve benefitted from having a little less negativity in his heart. Might’ve saved him from getting Hannibal Chau’d up by that griffon.
