“Speak Like a Child” by #HerbieHancok was recorded on March 6 and 9, 1968 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Herbie on piano, #RonCarter on bass, #MickeyRoker on drums, #JerryDodgion on alto flute, #PeterPhillips on bass trombone and #ThadJones on flugelhorn. When Herbie hit the studio in 1968 it was his first session as a leader in nearly three years as this was his last recording with #BlueNoteRocrds. His last session as a leader was “Maiden Voyage”. In the years between these two landmark recordings, Herbie was busy playing with #MilesDavis, Ron Carter, #WayneShorter and #TonyWilliams as part of Miles’ Second Great Quintet. If you read the liner notes Herbie explains his concept of putting this session together as it seems he was heavily influenced by the work of Gil Evans, Oliver Nelson and Thad Jones three heavy hitting arrangers who compose with large groups in mind. His note’s: "All the sounds in these pieces are a product of everything I've learned, particularly in recent work with Gil Evans, and, of course, in the five years I've been with Miles and the other men in the band. I feel I have to go on more and write for horns, explore more possibilities of textures. There are things I hear in my head that I don't often hear in other people's music, and I want to get more of those down. And I keep hearing new things and I have to find out what value they have, how they work out." The first time I heard this album I was intrigued by the makeup of his front line of alto flute, bass trombone and flugelhorn. I’ve always been a Herbie and Ron Carter fan and because “Riot” and “The Sorcerer” were part of this session I wanted to compare with the classics done with Miles on “Nefertiti” and “Sorcerer”. Although these versions were nice, I preferred the versions done with Miles. This is a Liberty pressing that I think you would enjoy. Spent the afternoon at the @dcrecordfair today and found a new record store @mlwl2809 my daughter and I will be visiting in the next few weeks. I also picked up this gem “That Healin’ Feelin’” by @HoraceSilver which was recorded on both April 8 and June 18, 1970, at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring Silver on piano, #RandyBecker on trumpet and flugelhorn, #GeorgeColeman on tenor, #BenCranshaw on bass, #MickeyRoker on drums, #HoustonPearson on tenor, #JimmyLewis on bass, #IdrisMuhammad on drums, #AndyBey on vocals, #GailNelson on vocals and #JackieVerdell on vocals. I had been looking for this for quite some time. I have it on CD, but I’ve only been able to find blue labeled UA copies and I’ve decided I’m not purchasing any UA’s again and I’m replacing the one’s I have with Liberty’s when I come across one. “Sonny Rollins on Impulse!” Recorded on July 8,1965 at the Van Gelder Studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey featuring #SonnyRollins on tenor, #RayBryant on piano, #WalterBooker on bass and #MickeyRoker on drums. This was his first session on the Impulse! Label. This is an Acoustic Sounds Series 60th Impulse! Anniversary reissue. Between 1965 and 1966 Sonny released three albums on Impulse! Rollins during the time of this recording had been recording for RCA and it’s subsidiary label Bluebird having spent the previous years concentrating on standards and focusing deeply on intimate, intricate aspects of melody and harmony. This session features five standards. The session opens with “On Green Dolphin Street” and from the outset Sonny shows who’s in charge followed by Ray Bryants piano solo behind the crisp rhythm section of Booker and Roker.
