This was his first session on the Impulse! Label. This is an Acoustic Sounds Series 60th Impulse! Anniversary reissue. Between 1965 and 1966 Sonny released three albums on Impulse! Rollins during the time of this recording had been recording for RCA and it’s subsidiary label Bluebird having spent the previous years concentrating on standards and focusing deeply on intimate, intricate aspects of melody and harmony. This session features five standards. The session opens with “On Green Dolphin Street” and from the outset Sonny shows who’s in charge followed by Ray Bryants piano solo behind the crisp rhythm section of Booker and Roker.
