Day 7 - See You Later
Summary: Post-TP, Post-BOTW When Midna told Link "See you later" instead of what she actually meant to say, she knew the chances of those words ever being true were slim to none. Until one day she was proven wrong. The Hyrule she would visit would not be the same one that she knew, but that wolf the knight had with him, he was more than familiar.

Phew! Hope you enjoy!
Let me just say that, in the year 2k19, I can be nothing but grateful that there are still a good number of people out there (114 to be exact!) who love and support Midlink enough to follow a silly blog dedicated to the bond they share. I’d love to do more with this blog in the future; right now, I’m working out the details for potentially hosting a Midlink Week at some point in the not-so-distant future, as the old blog dedicated to the week is no longer active. (Would y’all be interested in such a thing? Any ideas for themes?)
At any rate, I appreciate each and every one of you to pieces. Long live Midlink!

Otherworldly Forests
PREVIOUS PIECES: A Meeting in Shadow, The First Agreement. .
The moon peered through the branches and clouds into the forest floor. Link watched it from his position in the tree that he’d set up to watch from. For the moment it was just him and the twili while the third member of their little group was off likely getting supplies. A yawn escaped his mouth as he reached up to rub an eye.
“Don’t fall out of the tree, I’m not going to catch you,” he heard from his shadow.
“Thought you were asleep,” he replied, moving his back slightly against the trunk.
“Was. But thinking we should switch watch.”
Link looked over his shoulder at his own shadow against the trunk. In the moonlight it was very hard to see, but a pair of red eyes glowed from where his would have been. It reclined in a way he was not with its hands behind its head.
“Said a couple months ago anyways that every living thing needs sleep. Even a hexer like you isn’t exempt from that.”
“Chosen Champion, not hexer.” He turned away, shaking his head a little.
“Still don’t trust me, huh?” She moved out of his shadow to a sitting position on the thick branch next to him, pulling her hood back and kicking her legs a little with a yawn.
“Not completely, Midna.”
“Well, look at that. Progress! Not ‘hey you’ or ‘sorceress’ but my name!”
“Y’don’t need to be so sarcastic every time I do use your name.” He looked at her for a moment before going back to watching the skies. “And what about me? Y’gonna stop calling me ‘hey you’ and ‘idiot’ anytime soon?”
“Eh. Don’t push your luck.” Her red eyes shifted to look at him for a moment. “Though, I’ll concede that at least you’re a noble idiot instead of just a regular stupid one.”
Link merely sighed, though it turned into a yawn. A moment of silence passed between them before she spoke again.
“These are such strange forests.”
“Like the one back home for me. Grew up in a valley with a lot of trees around.” He sat up a little then, leaning forward and balancing himself with his foot. “They don’t have ones like this back home for you?” Link could see the faint reaction of worry. How her eyes widened and watered a tiny bit at being asked a question she wasn’t sure she should share. Midna closed her eyes and shook her head.
“The Twilight is mostly desolate. Like The Gerudo Deserts. The world is different. Continents float in the glow of a vast expanse. It goes on forever. There’s a lot of rocks and caverns with water flowing through them. Our ‘forests’ are comprised of glowing fungi in most places. My guess is because there’s no true sun there like the other worlds.” He saw her smile sadly. “In some caves, it grows on the walls and when the natural light of the world fades from it because the island turned, they glow like the stars in your world. Any water in the cave’ll reflect it…”
“Sounds like quite the sight.”
“It is.” She slowly looked his way. “Used to go exploring in them growing up. Before everything else. How I found Fenris actually.”
“Your big wolf, right?”
She smiled a little before looking back over the trees and night sky. “Yeah. Found him stuck in a hole and with a broken leg. Lifted him out and took him home.”
“And now he’s nearly as big as Epona.”
“Yeah, they can get pretty big. Much bigger than the ones in the other worlds.” It was her turn to yawn. “What about you? You ever go wandering?’
“Heh. Actually, getting sent out into the woods was a bit of a punishment for us back at The Tower.”
“Really?” Midna studied him with a raised brow.
“Yeah. If we got in trouble for something, we’d be sent out for a day to gather things for potions and other medicines.” Link bowed his head a little, almost adding the secret pieces of The Tower’s most important ritual. He glanced to his left for a moment and cleared his throat. “I liked it out there. Seeing and hearing all the different sights and sounds. The taste of the air was different from The Tower. Enjoyed tracking some of the animals around and learning how they reacted to when they could smell me or hear me. Got pretty good at tracking from it actually. Learned the area well and it helped during training.” He smiled a little, even though there was a hint of sadness to it. “Reminded me of the top of the island.”
“Island?”
He nodded. “Me and my sister, Aryll. We grew up on an island in the South Seas. At least, until the war.” Link slowly looked back at her. She had pulled her hood back up and wrapped her cloak around her a little tighter as the wind picked up. “Was this little forest. Mostly trees like this one. But a few palm trees too. Could see for miles from the old redwood on the hill. Remember climbing up it when I was five and scaring my mother…” Another yawn escaped his mouth. This time though his eyes closed. “I’d like to go back some day.”
“Mmm.” There was another long pause in the conversation. “Link?”
“Mmm?”
“You’re falling asleep, aren’t you?”
“And you’re not?” he half-mumbled. It was the last either of them said or heard until the dawn.
AN: Sorry for the massive delays. It’s been a helluva week on this end. I still have more to share with this but the rest will prolly be a bit late. But I have the others more or less ready. So they will be posted!
