The only F-104 lost during the Vietnam War, The planes radar malfunctioned and the pilot was lost he thought he was flying south over the South China Sea but he was actually going North radio was malfunctioning and the Pilot didn’t realize that he was approaching Hannian island China 🇨🇳. But the Chinese had the F-104 on radar and were tracking him. The Chinese dispatched two MiG-19 fighters to shoot the 104 down if it breached its territorial waters. The F-104 did indeed breach the invisible boarder and the MiG’s intercepted and shot him down. The pilot was never recovered and goes to show how one problem complicates another and tragedy ensues.
