Summary:
This is the story of how Sherlock became Sherlock and John became John, long before either knew there would ever be a Sherlock and John. This is the story of how their relationship began, with all its silent negotiations and quiet denials. This is the story of how the silence came apart after the Reichenbach fall. This is the story of how Sherlock returned from the fall, and how he and John put things back together again, in quite a different way than before. This is also the story of Mycroft and Sherrinford--we all know that third Holmes brother is out there somewhere--and also other canon characters, though some have changed a bit since Sir Arthur's day.
This is a story about loneliness and fate. This is a story about parents and brothers. This is a story about cocaine and Shepherd's Pie. This is a story about London, and Los Angeles, and Afghanistan. This is a story about love. Also, sex. There's quite a lot of that. This is a story with a happy ending, though at times it will make you sad.
This is the Sherlock and John story I've been wanting to tell for a very long time. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I have enjoyed writing it.
This is probably the longest fic I have ever read (apart from some series) but I am quite glad that I managed over 300.000 words in only 3,5 days, although I am working full-time and really have not much leisure time. But as it is, this fic is one of those you cannot put away, once you have started to read it. It is also one of those fics you postpone endlessly because of the high amount of words and regret that later endlessly, because you could have read this treasure so much earlier. Well, I would like to ad that this fic covers a lot of different things, which are not mentioned in the summary or the tags. You should read it, when you are interested in background characterization of John and Sherlock and when you are interested in their childhood and teenage years. John’s characterization is amazing. I really liked it. It is an attempt to describe his repressed bisexual character in a very profound way. Furthermore, I really like the additional characters Sherrinford Holmes and Neville St. Clair. As the WIP ends at the beginning of their relationship, I hope there is more to develop between them.
my newest ship: Sherrinford Holmes and Neville St. Clair
Miracle Year by Chase820 = SO. FREAKING. GOOD.
So yesterday in my, you know, copious spare time [cough*MANIA*cough] I sleeplessly started curating all my messy Marked-for-Laters and bookmarks in AO3, because when I started my account, I randomly made half of them private willy-nilly; but actually I want to share with the world, or anyway with Johnlockers, because! mira! check it! 99 awesome fics (& a bitch ain't one? hm)—so have at 'em! The usual longreads standards are here, of course, also some pretty, funny, sexy, angsty, nifty little one-shots as well; although probably nothing you haven't seen already—
—but somehow in the course of all this I started reading the one fiction that's not bookmarked there: Chase820's novel-in-progress, Miracle Year, which is currently at 285,240 words, 58/? chapters; and y'all, it is so far and away the best thing I've read in months, since I started pawing wildly through AO3 in January in an anguished attempt to get through post-hospitalization, moving, a super-gnarly breakup—and to soothe the blistering burn of what-it's-already-hiatus-again-how-is-this-possible; and that sour memory of that fucking wedding reception and John waltzing off with Mary like a total TOOL—okay where was I. Right. Here's the thing: when you start reading Miracle Year I'll be embarrassed because you'll see me goobering and gushing in capslock (caps!lock, oh dear) all over the comments section; but you know what, I don't even care, because honestly I find zer to be an astonishing prose stylist, and admittedly the part of me that's trained in literary writing wants to lock zer in a castle with only fountain pens for a year or two or five because I'm pretty sure that something by Flaubert or Nabokov or Borges or Rhys or Wharton or Mansfield or, I don't know, Hanif Kureshi plus Terry Pratchett would emerge only probably WAY MORE DEVASTATING AND STARTLINGLY GORGEOUS AND SMARTER AND MUCH BETTER.
Seriously. I have waded through every hundred-chapter thing you can think of, from million-word AUs to hot-action-starts-in-the-lede PWPs—all the exclams, I have read them all! the top!bottom! were!vampire! bamf!needy! possessive!pouty! alpha!omega! uglyjumper!purpleshirt! john!lock potter!lock bond!lock who!lock buffy!lock billoreilly!lock air!lock fet!lock neck!lock and cock!block—and hell, you know how it goes. Most of the time you're just flicking along furiously (can I flick your interface) hoping for a brief rewarding giggle or small warm fuzzy; or, maybe you're cruising along sort of enjoying the writing and then John says something utterly out of character, or Sherlock says "if I was" or "between you and I" or uses an idiom incorrectly; and whatever spell was momentarily cast is shattered. Even among the 99 competent, bracingly well-crafted fics in my bookmarks, this is just different. Chase820, whoever this talented being is, this person, this writer, is not going to let you down, not ever. When Woolf said in her Girton lecture that thing about the writer who launches an ambitious sentence, like a rider taking a jump, and you watch holding your breath hoping that she clears and makes it to the other side—Chase820 is going to make it. She's doing some uncanny ninja urban parkour Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon flying-from-rooftop-to-rooftop shit. She nails those things, every time, uncannily, like a genetically engineered Soviet-era child gymnast. I can't keep banging on because by this point you're starting not to believe me but please believe me, it is stunning and you are going to be so happy after even just two chapters of it. I know it's not finished but do this. Do this for your brain, for your bones, for the joy of your intellect and your heart. Start reading Miracle Year. Do it. Do it for the Other Brother. (Also! every few chapters Chase820 posts wonderful LJ self-metas (?) in which she casts and costumes her fic, scouts locations, draws up floor plans, designs the soundtrack, and even find photographs of sandwich ingredients: for example. This is some generous fanservice, people.)
Dear god, ch. 26.
I made it to chapter 24 of Miracle Year
A Brief Announcement
Earlier today someone asked us for help finding a fic that was based on a poem called annus mirabilis and featured a third Holmes brother, Sherrinford.
We accidentally deleted that person's ask, so we can't find them to tell them that we found the fic! It's Miracle Year by chase820.
So, we're posting this here in the hopes that they see it. If you're that person, here's your fic. If not, please feel free to ignore this!
(Here's) where we reviewed it originally. Enjoy.
