I HAVE A THOUGHT!!!!
rhodey and tony went to mit together right? right, tony the little shit that he is (once him and rhodey are Besties™️) has trained rhodey to be aware of where he is at all times bc tony will run and leap at him (no matter what) and expect rhodey to catch him. flash forward to the iron man days and maybe a few years into it, all the Seriousness, and here is rhodey minding his own sweet ass business and walking through the tower and…. what’s that sound? it takes rhodey a second to place it before on auto pilot he braces, and a familiar weight is up against his back, legs wrapped around his waist. “good to know you’ll still catch me honeybear,” says tony with a obnoxious smooch to rhodey cheek.
BOOM *finger guns*
So what you're saying is they're the Marvel version of
I imagine it got to the point at MIT that whoever was standing next to Rhodey just grabbed whatever he was holding so he's free to catch Tony when he comes sprinting at him. He just thanks god that laptops and cellphones Weren't A Thing in the 80s and the most he had to worry about was his Discman, which Tony would fix immediately (or, memorably, simply replaced it after they silently watched his backpack sink into the river).
This is all well and good until after a battle where everyone's sort of on edge making sure the enemy is down but once JARVIS tells Tony he sees no more combatants he just bellows "I REQUIRE COMFORT" and Rhodey barely gets his arms up in time to KIND OF catch him as Tony pummels into him, suit and all. Natasha makes the sound of their armors clashing together her new ringtone and makes very deliberate eye contact with Rhodey whenever she gets a text. Joke's on her though because Rhodey doesn't care once Tony has fixed his armor.
("At least we didn't fall into the river, haha," Tony offers awkwardly, after Natasha's phone has gone off in debrief, and Rhodey stands up and bellows about how he had to redo all his Statistics homework. He's come to terms with living with Tony pitching himself blindly into his arms but man. Tony couldn't buy him a new finished homework sheet he had to do all that work again.)
