I get in theory why people complain about het ships or whatever, I get wanting to watch queer media I really do, but I guess where y’all lose me is like. I saw some asshole on a post about Sinners complaining it was “hetslop”—this person was specifically doing so while also claiming Remmick was a queer character and thus they were justified in caring more about him than the Black protagonists. which is a whole other disgusting can of worms that has been well addressed by others at this point. but even in the absence of that part of the argument, like, no, i actually don’t think that a hunger for queer stories is an especially good excuse to deride and dismiss a piece of landmark Black filmmaking, especially as a non-Black person. I have a post that’s been going around encouraging folks to engage with more Native stories and characters, and I had someone come onto that post saying in the tags that they’d need these stories to be queer in order to care. and I just think that, you know, sucks! like obviously as a queer Native I also want to see more of those stories too. but idk how else to put it other than to say that Black people and people of color shouldn’t have to be like you in order for you to care about our narratives and experiences. and I think some of y’all are using this disdain for heterosexuality as a cover for your unexamined racial biases. it’s not okay to be racist to people just because those people happen to be straight, and you continue to be white before you are queer.

on an even more basic level than that, also, I simply just think some of y’all NEED to learn how to interact with media and storytelling without ships and fandom in mind. like if not being able to write fic about two men kissing is genuinely going to be a dealbreaker for you I think that’s actually something you need to work on within yourself because at that point I think you’re no longer really interacting with art and themes and narrative so much as just kind of playing with toys. which is, like, fine I guess. have fun. but it wouldn’t kill you to disengage from that from time to time. especially if would allow you to actually appreciate rich and deeply moving cultural stories from communities of color that you desperately need to learn how to see as human

I took this screenshot bc of Rocky swearing but him pointing out at the end of the book that Ryland Grace hasn’t cried in a long time is honestly making me emotional.

Don’t get me wrong, I love that Grace is a weepy guy, I think it’s an essential part of his character. And he’s humble about his new situation like “it’s not perfect but I’ve got my friends and my meburgers and I get to teach again.” But dang this just goes to show how happy and calm and safe life on Erid is for him. Because Tears Georg, who cried 10,000 tears every day aboard the Hail Mary hasn’t cried in a “long-ass time” according to his closest friend. 🥹

Ryland Grace is the character of all time actually. He's a genius molecular biologist. He's a middle school teacher. He wears big cozy knitted jumpers and his glasses are hanging off his face (defying gravity) roughly 58% of the time. He thinks he's a coward but makes peace with dying for a good cause. His best friend is a rock alien he met on an end of the world buddy-buddy roadtrip. The first thing he teaches to said alien best friend are dance moves. He saves the universe with the power of shitty arts and crafts. He cries in more scenes than any male lead I can remember in a Hollywood movie. His happy ending is living in a terrarium on a distant planet like his alien best friend's weird rescue pet. He's also aroace coded.

I love this scene so much. Rocky & Grace are both so happy to finally have someone to interact with. And Rocky wanting Grace to tap finger to finger...just how happy he is to finally have someone there with him, despite the language barrier & the thick xenonite glass between them.

(Fun fact: James & the Rocketeers improvised that movement and Ryan's surprised reaction & smile are 100% genuine, not scripted!)

Grace getting really good at tapestry knitting and crochet since Eridian fibers are uncomfy for clothing and he ends up with a bunch of nice tapestries hanging in his house in the biodome.

Rocky says "why Grace hang up plain piece of cloth. Question?" The first time Grace finishes one and proudly shows it off to his bestie.

And Grace is like "oh. Right. There's a color pattern but....you cant see that. Hmm"

So the next one he makes also has the pattern textured (thank you purl stitches. Seed/moss stitch makes for great tactile patterning) and he shows this one off and Rocky is like "AMAZE! Pretty pattern on Grace art! Look nice hanging on wall! Can make Rocky one to hang in Rocky Adrian house?"

Grace figures out cables too after much practice and gifts Rocky and Adrian a beautiful tapestry made with cables to look like an earth tree on the Eridian Equivalent of their anniversary. They cherish it.

Introducing Petrova! Rocky and Adrian’s dramatic artsy little Pebble. Petrova chose She/Her after watching Earth Music Puppet Show “Hair Spray.” She loves Earth Art, especially music and musicals. “Humans use sound to make art question? Not just for talk and thrum question?! Amaze Amaze Amaze!” Her favorite catchphrase is “Petrova having a moment” after she learned why Uncle Grace named her Petrova.
