future Chat Blanc theory (how Adrien will get akumatized again)
so I was rewatching the Bubbler from season 1 and I may have just stumbled upon something significant
I have a theory about how Adrien will be akumatized in the future (because we all know Chat Blanc was only delaying the inevitable).
read below, but be aware of season 4 spoilers and the possibility that this may be a spoiler!!
So, if you’ll remember, in the Bubbler, Adrien’s birthday comes and goes and Marinette’s gift for him, the blue scarf, he ultimately ends up thinking was a gift from his father (due to Gabriel making Nathalie get him a goft last minute and Marinette having only signed the gift with a sticky note, which was easy to discard). At the end, Marinette finds out that Adrien thinks Gabriel made it for him, and he explains how his father had given him “the same lame pen for three years in a row”, and Nino, who had just been akumatized over his anger at Gabriel’s control over Adrien, comments how adults really can change and be cool. Marinette decides to let Adrien keep believing that the scarf was from his father because “he seems so happy about his dad”.
now, we know that the scarf has not been forgotten, namely because of the endcard in Mr Pigeon 72:
What place does this scarf have in this episode, especially since it wasn’t even shown or mentioned in the episode?
Well, it was. Just not directly.
What the scarf symbolizes is the hope that Adrien continues to have for his father. This scarf represents, to Adrien, the idea that his father really does care for him and can be good sometimes. This is likely ultimately why Adrien continues to put up with how controlling he is— because he thinks it’s all because his father truly cares about him. He only sees the goodness in him because that scarf makes it so easy for him.
At the end of Mr. Pigeon 72, we have an Umbrella Scene 2, only the prospect of Marinette and Adrien walking home together is cut short because of Gabriel’s “demanding”ness over Adrien’s life. The scarf in the finale represents how Adrien continues to spoil his own happiness (in this scene, the possibility of walking home with Marinette) because of his capacity for his father’s demandingness, caused by the belief his father is still a relatively good person and cares for him, the scarf being proof.
Let’s switch gears for a moment.
I’m sure you remember Chat Blanc, but to sum it up, Marinette giving Adrien a gift in his bedroom while transformed as Ladybug leads to two different timelines (by the end of the episode, at least): one where she signs it as Marinette, and one where she doesn’t. The first timeline that plays out is the one where she signs her gift. This timeline devolves into the Chat Blanc timeline because Adrien figures out her identity through this situation, which spirals into a series of events in which he is akumatized and led to choose between Ladybug/Marinette and his father/Hawkmoth (rip Shadowmoth in this timeline I guess). Later, to prevent this timeline from ever happening, Ladybug does not sign the gift and instead says it was from Adrien’s Brazilian fan club and that she was simply delivering it.
The main takeaway here is the massive similarity to the situation in the Bubbler— a gift from Marinette to Adrien, in which there’s a whole debacle about signing it, which has the potential to change how Adrien views his father and even Marinette.
Season 4 is all about secrets. Telling the truth, telling lies, or even just withholding the truth and keeping a secret. Bringing back the scarf from the Bubbler makes so much sense: it’s a secret that has only grown in importance with time, one which influences Adrien’s actions but ultimately is increasingly separating him from everyone he could potentially connect with, as seen as season 4 has gone on. In recent season 4 episodes, Adrien is even visually separated from everyone to get that point across, both in endcards and actual episodes:
And why? Well, ignoring the whole Gang of Secrets reveal, Mr Pigeon 72 explained why Adrien can’t get close to friends: because of his father. Because he still sees the good in his father.
Tying back to the whole secrets theme, Marinette having made the blue scarf was probably the first conscious secret in the show (outside of identities, of course). And it has had a major impact on Adrien, more so as time has gone on, to the point where what it lead him to believe, though made him happy in the Bubbler, is isolating him from his friends and allowing him to keep doing it under the guise that his father is still redeemable.
However, we the audience know that Marinette actually made the scarf, and with the theme of secrets this season and its comeback in Mr. Pigeon 72, it is likely that the truth about this secret will be revealed to Adrien. This has the potential to change how Adrien thinks about his father entirely.
And, considering how paralleled to Chat Blanc the scarf is, it may just lead to his akumatization in the main timeline.
Think about it. It was Marinette leaving her signature in Chat Blanc that was ultimately the catalyst for his akumatization. With the revelation that the scarf was truly from Marinette, it would be a direct parallel to her leaving her signature, since Adrien finds out that it was from her.
Thus, it is entirely likely that Adrien becoming akumatized as Chat Blanc (again) will be directly caused by him finding out that the blue scarf was Marinette’s gift, not his father’s.
Especially with the episode Sentibubbler coming up, we know that themes from the Bubbler are making a comeback in a twisted season 4 way. Giving the scarf a comeback is the perfect way to do this, especially since it ties so neatly with the secrets theme and parallels so directly with how Chat Blanc went down.
I’m onto something here right??? Like I can’t believe I haven’t seen this theory elsewhere, I can’t be the first for it to have occurred to! I feel like this is really possibly going to happen, like it all kind of clicks together.
If/when it does, I will be yelling
