cutie mark crusaders!
I need to share my thoughts about dragon ageing in the MLP universe.
Okay, so from season 1 to 9 (minus the last episode which takes place decades into the future), it's assumed that six years go by based on how many Christmas episodes there are.
It's also assumed Twilight hatched Spike at age 6 at the youngest, and she's supposedly 18 at the start of season 1. Meaning that Spike should be around 12 years old at that point.
Yet, despite being 12, Spike is strictly referred to as a "Baby Dragon". By all means, he should be a preteen, yeah? Yet he's never called that.
But in season 7, he gets his wings at around 16 years old. Again, he should definitely be considered a teenager by this point!
So, my thought process, based on all the evidence, is this:
Dragons, regardless of age, are in the "baby" stage until they get their wings and become teenage dragons.
Teenage dragons can actually be any age (for all we know, Spike could've been a late bloomer). Garble and his friends never change throughout the few times we see them (for obvious reasons– why change a background characters design when time doesn't significantly pass?). BUT! All the adult dragons we see are extremely big, quadruped, and have similar body types.
My point is, "teenage" is a vague term for dragons. We don't know when teenage dragons start their next growth spurt(s) and become adults. For all we know, a 30 year old dragon could technically be still called a teenager.
Types of Dragons- (to be added and edited as world building continues)
Dragons are a species heavily influenced by elemental magic. Subspecies of dragon often rely heavily upon their inner magic and environments ambient magic.
Arctic Dragons: Born in the frozen north, these dragons are aligned with ice, wind, and water. Thick coats of polar bear like fur. Their underbelly is plated with scales for protection against sharp ice and cave floors. They tend to live underground in the cave systems of the frozen north. They have a long history with the Crystal Empire. In the wastes of the frozen north you need all the allies you can get, and befriending the dragons who can traverse the bitter cold with little problem is a good thing. - [think like a smaller version of Japanese style dragons, not as noodle. Fuzzy lizards]
Volcanic Dragons: born in volcanic regions, these dragons are practically immune to heat, fire, and lava. With matching alignments in fire, wind, and earth. The first thing you think of when you hear dragon probably. Fire breathing and lava bathing, covered in mostly thick rock like scales. They sadly have a rocky relationship with their pony neighbors despite their efforts to appease. Ponies just have to many expectations….and frankly many impossible expectations. They consider dragon culture “greedy” but have never stopped to consider that since rocks/minerals, gemstones and metals are a staple food source that “hoards” are the equivalent of a pantry. Despite their rocky relationship with many ponies, they get along well with Earth ponies who have a diet that leans towards rocks minerals and gemstones. These ponies at least know what they’re talking about, these ponies are hoot to be around. They adore exchanging recipes. Baked goods with sapphire? Delightful! - [for a good description think of the western style dragons, or the canon ones I guess.]
Empyrean Dragons: Born in the tops of mountains, in cloud cities, or in the branches of ancient trees. These dragons are aligned with air/wind, electric, water, and ice. Considered the dragons of the skies and heavens. These dragons are often the go to for depicting deities like the Celestial sisters. Long bodied, covered in decent amount of fur, scaled underbelly, and giant horns on their heads and often running down their backs. Wings are not required for flight when you are aligned with the sky itself. They have good relationships with other flying creatures like gryphons, Pegasus, and Harpies (what I call the anthro birds) - [Japanese dragons basically. Fuzzy noodle dragons. 👍]
cant pick an artstyle for the life of me i hate my life kms NOW
Due to Spikes birth and Twilights eventual ascension into an Alicorn can it kinda be assumed that he is probably a Demigod? Son/little brother of Magic
I mean he’s at least a new species of dragon entirely. He’s able to use his dragon breath in ways other dragons can’t. He’s able to use spells to varying degrees although canonically he only uses it for letter mailing to Celestia. I imagine he can and eventually learns how to use other spells. Twilight wouldn’t turn down a chance to teach her son/brother magic if he’s ever interested.
It’s the year of the dragon, but they didn’t say they couldn’t be cute dragons.
I asked on Instagram who was the favourite dragon and the most votes went to Spike. For me, it’s Spiny or Prickles. Who is your favourite?
L-R: Spike, Sparks (light red), Firey (red), Flash (yellow), Prickles (green), Smokey (blue), Spiny (purple).
Fun Fact! Generally speaking, the higher up in the atmosphere you are, the more magic potential you have; and if you have a way to express it? Then you get what unicorns and reindeer have!
While unicorns can openly express their magic with their horns, Pegasus are technically the most magical of the tribes (and possibly of most species) due to their high altitude. Cities on clouds and such. Thats how they control the weather, that’s how they can fly with such smaller wings, that’s how they’re faster than most other species. They may not have horns to levitate shit with pure magic, but it’s getting expressed Somehow here
Look at it like this. Dragons live on high up valcanos and caves, Kirin live on the Peaks of Peril, Reindeer live on mountain tops. All have magic abilities! Unicorns used to live in mountains, but nowadays thats faded away. They’re weaker, less magical than they used to be in the older days. There’s a reason Canterlots on a mountainside folks, there’s a reason why the best, strongest unicorns study on a MOUNTAIN
februpony day 12: ponysona
not a pony, a dragon- well technically a feathered wyvern!
I’ve had many trial and errors with ponysonas in my lifetime, none really stuck with me and i always ended up changing them constantly. then I made Squid and I have never been happier!! sure they’re a dragon but a colorful silly one! they mean alot to me dearly!
