the curious case of teddy and sweetheart 🧸🩷

teddy and sweetheart are an interesting couple in my little pony tales, i see some people say they are a toxic couple and other's say they're sweet.

teddy is depicted as a bully and often is the antagonist to the main 7 ponies of my little pony tales, but he's also shown to have a much sweeter side and sleeps with his teddy bear every night (a secret only sweetheart knows about) I think teddy as a character is so interesting! there's speculation in the fandom regarding his parents, as only his mother is ever heard, and theories on whether his behavior results from an absent father.

sweetheart is well, a complete sweetheart. she has a crush on teddy and is referred to as teddy's girlfriend in Blue Ribbon Blues. she sees the best in him and knows that he often acts out (and also isn't afraid to tell him he's being wrong) but believes his acting out is just that, acting out. the song she sung about him in Stand By Me explains it well the others simply just don't know him like she knows him.

i think teddy and sweetheart are a perfect couple, sweetheart doesn't make teddy better she makes him want to be better. i really do think teddy has underlying issues that were never explored in the show that make him act the other way - but regardless im glad that he has sweetheart to love and support him.

i think it's super interesting that my little pony tales had such a complex male character when male characters barely existed (with the exception of Danny and Spike) in generation 1 and even in friendship is magic the male characters are mostly just used to fuel the female characters story arcs - not as a stand alone complex character like teddy is.

PATCH! My favourite.

Patch is the biggest member of her friend group, in turn the physically strongest. She came out as a lesbian in high school and prides herself in being a bit of a ladykiller. As a career, she works in construction and carpentry, taking on small home repair jobs outside of bigger projects.

Patch is the founder of the “Big Sister Program” at the local foal’s home, where she lived as a young foal before being adopted. The program pairs adult ponies that were adopted themselves with young foals waiting to find their own family. The older ponies act as big siblings and mentors to the young ones, offering support and reassurance to them. Patch was initially paired with a young filly named Paisley, who would go on to be adopted by Patch’s friends, Ace and Fleur. Paisley still looks up to Patch a great deal and considers her a big sister.

In her youth, Patch encountered a UFO while flying in a hot air balloon that she commandeered from her school yard. The UFO was actually a group of glowing, magical ponies with wings. Though Bonbon was with her, Patch was the only one to actually witness and even speak to the flying ponies. Since then she’s dedicated a decent chunk of her free time to finding them again, scanning the night sky with her telescope and even going on excursions around Ponyland, searching for vantage points where she could potentially see them. She’s been written off as a crackpot conspiracy theorist by most, though a few of her friends do see the genuine passion in her eyes when she talks about the incident.

I saw a gif of this moment in MLPT’s “Battle of the Bands” a couple days ago, and decided to do a kind of redraw, but paying a bit more attention to the Rockin’ Beats toys - where they of course did not yet have Melody as their vocalist. They all got vibrant 80s eye-shadow to go with their blazing colour palettes. In the series, Tuneful has the Argentinian colouring, so I went ahead and used that, but also kept her a unicorn because unicorn and pegasus erasure in MLPT is a thing that I’m just never going to be okay with.
