Hey everyone! One of my (several) recent projects has been this Riven-themed t-shirt design, made for the gameās 20th anniversary and my own 25th, and today I got the go-ahead from Cyan to release it! I am pleased to have it available to anyone and everyone in my Redbubble store if youād like to give it a look and maybe outfit yourself in some rebel style!
Finished Moitey ā3ā³ eyeball artifact from Riven, carved out of an old croquet ball and painted to taste. There are several other excellent replicas out there but it always bothered me that none were made from wood as seen in-game, so tackling it myself became a test of my abilities and sheer will. The number 3 ball was really the only choice for me, both because itās the first one encountered in the game, and my personal favorite. Who doesnāt remember that chirpy ribbit it makes! I constructed a small scene to show it off with various aesthetic objects and a matching Moitey dagger by the talented MYSTRIVEN. Iām glad there was some interest in my process shots from yesterday, and likewise, I hope this finished presentation shows it in its best light for your viewing pleasure. Thanks for checking this out, and keep an eye out (har har) for a potential followup in the near future!
Happy Thursday everyone! Iāve been quiet recently, but for good reason - Iāve taken on a little project to test my boundaries and produce something Iāve always wanted to see up close! Any of my followers who are also Myst fans (probably most of you) will know what this is immediately: one of the numbered eyeballs found across the Village Island of Riven! Theyāre a core component of the central puzzle, unlocking the rebel age of Tay by referencing the various animals native to the islands. Theyāre a curious combination of Rivenese design and Dāni numbering, and the perfect thing to chip away at after work.
Youāll have to excuse the quality of my cellphone pictures, but as you can see, its design stage went fairly straightforward until it came to painting. The ball itself is an old croquet ball I found on Etsy, picked for its weathered and beat-up surface and for its near-perfect color match. What I didnāt anticipate was that it was hard as granite and treated with some kind of oil or creosote, so it was exceedingly tough to carve and tougher to paint. I would have preferred to not paint it, but the interior wood color was about the same as the surface, and trying a proper weathering method will make a good project for another day (hint hint).
At first I went ambitious and tried to make an earth pigment from local caliche sandstone and linseed oil, but it turns out you need things like tools to do that properly and I didnāt want to bother to use them. So, when it spread on like peanut butter, I turned first to pastels, then to a water-based āpicklingā paint (which I suspect is actually acrylic), and finally a weathering pass with colored pencils. It doesnāt look like bare wood, and certainly isnāt perfect, but I think it does look like the kind of thing a culture like the Rivenese could produce with local materials. Itās heavy, dirty, beat-up, and exactly what I was hoping to create.
Check back tomorrow for its beauty shots which will give a clearer close-up on each side, as well as give it some cultural context. Until then, thanks for stopping by!
