A view of the farmhouse at Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel, #NewJersey. This fourteen room Federal-style #farmhouse was built in stages between 1775 and 1840. The site includes a Dutch barn (c. 1792) and a collection of nineteenth century outbuildings, plus a barnyard, complete with farm animals. #throwbackthursday In April 2015 I visited Battery Lewis, built in 1942, at Hartshorne Woods Park in Middletown Township, Monmouth County, #NewJersey. The battery was named after Colonel Isaac N. Lewis, inventor of the lightweight Lewis aircraft machine gun, who died November 9, 1931. The battery contained two 16 inch caliber gun emplacements connected by a corridor housing ammunition storage and power rooms. The exterior was restored in 2013. In 2015, a surplus 16 inch gun originally mounted on the USS New Jersey during World War II was donated by the U.S. Navy to the Monmouth County Park System for permanent display. Also in 2015, the site was added to the @nationalregisternps as the Navesink Military Reservation Historic District.
