Apparently There’s an Issue with Not Hating Undead?
A few days ago I made a post asking for help in creating a word that meant the prejudice based on undeath such as how racism is the prejudice based on race.
You may view the original post here: https://ravenbane13.tumblr.com/post/179765892746/prejudice-against-undead
Why the post was made:
This was done because as a DM I work with players to create NPCs connected to the players’ backstories and our new cleric (Melchor) wanted his character to have two brothers. He wanted Boznor, the middle child, to be a paladin that is prejudiced against “dark” and “monstrous” races as well as undead. This was meant to serve as a foil between the two with Melchor actually obeying his god and judging others according to their actions while Boznor used the religion he never bothered to learn about to justify his hatred towards certain groups and judge others according to their race and/or mortality. The idea to find a word to express the prejudice against undead in a world where undead could be any alignment was the player’s idea.
Response to some of the comments:
From what I’ve read in comments/reblogs, there seems to be a lot of strong emotions against seeing undead as non-evil beings. In other terms, I’m getting a lot of backlash for the paladin being prejudiced against undead but not as much for being racist, sexist, or classist. In fact, some have made comments about it being okay for there to be racism and other prejudices so they can make jokes about them but that making the hatred for undead a legit prejudice is stupid.
Like, hold up, we can make jokes about racism and classism but we gotta draw the line when you want to treat a fictional creature with respect in a fictional setting that we’re not even a part of.
Honestly the level of hypocrisy in that it’s okay to make jokes off of real life prejudices in D&D but they take offense at a prejudice that only exists in a fictional setting is unsettling for me. In fact, in some canon D&D settings there are non-evil undead (i.e., baelnorn and archliches) so I don’t know where they’re getting this whole “all undead in D&D are evil” thing from. Here are links to the baelnorn and archlich pages from the FR wiki:

Thankfully while many of the comments were like that, not all were and some actually helped with the process of making a word or phrase for it, so shout out to @concentrated-sunshine , @alaija , and @kildozer . While you guys had some good ideas, we ultimately decided to go with mortism: https://ravenbane13.tumblr.com/post/179767721596/mortism
