Who's more romantic, Ethan or Kaycee? And Tobias or Casey?

And also what's the most romantic thing the men have done for their wives?

Hello dear Sara,

I have been sitting on this because I'm so torn.

With Ethan and Kaycee, it's very easy to say, at face value, that it's Kaycee. She is definitely more hearts, fluff, and butterflies than Ethan is. But that's just Kaycee's personality; it's who she is, so of course she's going to give that to Ethan because she loves him with all her heart. But, being romantic is not who Ethan is. It's not in his nature, and it takes some getting used to for him. Still, he goes out of his way to make romantic gestures, big and small, because he knows it makes Kaycee. So to me, that's a huge thing in its own right. So while Kaycee is more of a traditional romantic, Ethan's got game too!

With Tobias and Casey, they're both such big, disgusting mush balls when it comes to each other. Casey is such a romantic that it is hard for me to even entertain the idea that Tobias could be more romantic than her... but girl... I think he's more romantic than her. Tobias always knew how to "lay on" the romance if he wanted to... but it was always a bit of a means to an end, not entirely sincere. So while he may have been the wine and roses type, it didn't go beyond that. Then along comes Casey, and she's the real deal, and all of a sudden, nearly 40 years of suppressed romance comes popping out of this guy. Factor in that he realized he loved her... the first person he ever loved... when he thought she was dying. So he never ever takes her for granted.

The most romantic thing, for both of them, there are so many instances it's hard to pick just one. Especially because I believe (so they do, too, lol) that true romance is not in big, expensive gifts or gestures. It's in the little things we do to show we love someone every day. It's when Ethan makes sure Kaycee has her perfect cup of coffee every morning. It's always waiting for her; she never has to ask. It's the way Tobias and Casey have a deal that he cooks, she does the dishes, then 9 out of 10 times, he does the dishes anyway. Those little things every day mean more than anything.

But if we're talking about big romantic gestures, I think the recent fic I wrote about Ethan cooking the same dinner they had at their wedding every year on their anniversary, then seeing to it that their daughter would carry on the tradition after he died... that's like swoon-worthy romance. lol

With Tobias, I think his biggest gesture was before they were even together. When he realized he was the only one she was comfortable going out of the apartment with initially after the attack, he made it a point to take her out weekly - wherever she wanted to go, whatever she wanted to do. Most of the time, it was just going to the bookstore they loved in Cambridge (where he'd always buy her at least one book) and then to lunch after. But he was there each and every week. He encouraged her and helped her feel alive again. The clincher, he was madly in love with her, and she said they could not be more than friends. He never pushed it, and he did it knowing the whole time he could just be helping her get well to end up in someone else's arms, but he did it anyway. To me, that is beyond romantic... it's what real love is supposed to be, selfless.

MXTX Superlatives #7: Most Romantic

Hold up, how did LWJ triumph over HC when it comes to romantic gestures? HC carved ten thousand statues of XL and released 3000 lanterns in his name, didn’t he? How can LWJ even compare to that?

Exactly, that’s the thing. HC is a ghost king. He’s over 800 years old. LWJ is human. He’s a baby compared to HC. So that’s why their romantic gestures need to be compared according to their situations and by a slightly different definition.

LWJ won this category because of the context of his romantic gestures. His gestures are often silent and sometimes, they completely fly over WWX’s head, but that doesn’t matter to LWJ. That’s how small those gestures are, and yet they’re more romantic than HC’s grand gestures? Let me explain after a couple of examples: 

LWJ dutifully raised the rabbits despite there being a no pets rule. He wrote and sang WangXian, a song that meant absolutely nothing to WWX at the time, but it meant the world to LWJ. He knew Wei Ying didn’t eat well at the family banquet, so he cooked all of WWX’s favorite dishes. He hid several jars of Emperor’s Smile in his room, even though there was no guarantee of WWX’s return. He threw a ring over WWX’s head during a ring toss game because “everything it encircles will belong to him”. He learned that WWX loved lotus root and pork ribs soup, so he went to the restaurant kitchens to overlook the process of making it, just so he can one day cook it for him. He carefully preserved the peony WWX casually threw at him that day “he was bored”, even though their relationship could only be described as chilly at the time. 

With over half of those examples, LWJ never said a word of it to WWX until WWX explicitly asked about it for confirmation. Those are LWJ’s romantic gestures. In anyone else’s eyes, none of those gestures are particularly grand or flashy, but the thing is, it’s grand to them. They are big gestures because it’s all specific to their relationship, all important to their relationship, no one else’s.

On the other hand, HC’s actions are actions are more defined as acts of devotion influenced by his love for XL. There is a difference between devotional and romantic gestures. Like aforementioned, LWJ’s gestures were specific to their relationship. It meant something to them as a couple or as individual people. 

Are lanterns particularly special or especially symbolic of HuaLian? In part, yes, I suppose so since they were released on the date in which they first met. But consider this: is it the date that made the lanterns special or the lanterns that made the date special? The lanterns themselves don’t particularly matter to them. Honestly, I’m sure both of them can care less about lanterns, since HC is a ghost king, and XL literally has no interest in the lantern contest or having people release lanterns for him. In fact, those lanterns matter more to the other heavenly officials than it does to XL. So that’s why the 3000 lanterns skew more towards the devotional side of the spectrum, but that’s not to say it’s not romantic.

Continuing on, the statues are another an important symbol closely related to HuaLian, but Xie Lian doesn’t really care about statues of himself. He was never really picky about his statues at all. Statues in general don’t matter to Xie Lian, which is why, similarly to the lanterns, the statues are considered to be a devotional gesture, rather than a romantic one. 

Once again, I’m not implying HuaLian don’t have romantic gestures or that WangXian don’t have devotional gestures. They certainly do! 

HC gave XL a ring made of his ashes. He never told XL what it was, told him to just “keep it for fun”, despite it being his literal lifeline. The dice are another romantic gesture, since HC will come for XL no matter what XL rolls. The red string on their fingers literally being a the red string of fate, both of them refusing to remove it no matter the circumstances. The coral bead earring that was separated from its other half when HuaLian met, and is (hinted to be) reunited with its long-lost pair at the end of their journey (I only realized this parallel upon writing this superlative, and it’s messed me up). There’s also XL teaching patiently HC calligraphy (though I guess that’s more XL’s romantic gesture), and HC’s terrible tattoo. The point is, it’s specific to their relationship, it symbolizes their love, and it’s important to them, but rather insignificant to anyone else.

Just to make it even, some of LWJ’s devotion: the fight against the 33 elders, the whip scars, raising A-Yuan, putting up with WWX’s bullshit act so calmly when he first comes back in MXY’s body, etc.

Dirty Dancing BTS - I have never seen these scenes before. It debunked the rumors that Patrick Swayze couldn’t stand Jennifer Grey. I always thought it was odd because this was their second movie together (they were in the original Red Dawn). Personally, they look very content with each other while practicing the moves. I love this video!!!
