There is one other term that surfaces from time to time, this is the kikongo Nkita – and there are some ramas that use this term in reference to its lineage. Nkita was a name given to diviners and healers societies in Kongo, more specifically the Angolan part. The word defines the spirit of the deceased, but in particular one who exerts its terrestrial influence by haunting wells, watery ravines and creeks. Vermin issuing from polluted water and fertile organisms are its messengers which represents its day side and night side. The word nkita was also used as an alias for mpungo, often understood on the basis of it taking serpentine form. Overall these spirits maintain an association with water and death, as the nfumbe holds with the Kalunga, the abysmal waters, the deep liquid space of ancestral wisdom. It does seem that it might represent a specific class of departed ones that lived on in the mysteries of Simbi in Haitian Vodou – a Kongo mystery, the kisimbi.

Well, Lucero in chamalongos pretty much insisted I go forward with that idea to write things up somewhere website, so I'm writing a factsheet as learning/working. Never wrote anything on this subject, so it's just short notes and may be disjointed, I need to yet find own voice in this.

Mpungo Kikoroto (Kikoroto Makutare and Cassumbecá in Brillumba, San Sebastian or crucified Christ in Kimbisa, also rarer St. Francis, Nsambia Muna Bembo and Saulán Bembo Kongó in Mayombe) - mpungo of rain  - any sort of streaming water, from both the sky and the ground, and the vegetation growing from that rain afterwards, Europe & north Asia relevant: mushrooms - mpungo of right absorbtion  - life path protection: when life hammers you down, resilience to beatdowns; standing through repeated attacks and life preservation, including verbal abuse: keeping honor; martial arts: series of punches or kicks; is sheltering - health: any infection caused by fungi exema eye infections mouth infection prevention, especially after tooth extraction slows bleeding proper reabsorbtion of stitches washing out toxins - related mpungo: Nfinda Mamba, Nguatariamba Enfumba Bata

Working with the Mpungo

In my Rama we're moving to a more heavily Mayombe approach, avoiding some of the mixing with Ocha that has occurred with certain Brillumba ideas. We don't make specific nganga's for spiritual forces; all of our ngangas are brought to life with the force that is Siete Rayos, but they aren't named for that force. It is a natural force used to awaken the Nganga into life, but it isn't a camino like those used in Ocha/Santeria. We work with two nkisi, our Nkuyu Nfinda (Lucero) and the Nganga with Nfumbe (the dead).This is all we need to work with all of the forces of nature. So, to work with Gurunfinda, we would use our Lucero to open the roads, and then use Gurunfinda's firma to open lines of communication with that force. (If you are engeuyo like I am; if you are already a Tata, the mpaka/nganga is worked with to use the energy of Gurunfinda, after Lucero opens the roads).
