In 3x03: Faith, Hope, And Trick, three important characters are introduced, all of whom are indicated in the title. The most of essential of these characters is of course Faith, who goes on to be a Big Bad, and whose relationship to Buffy frames the rest of the season. The other two characters are relevant in how they relate to Faith. She ends up subsuming each of their narrative roles; that is why they are grouped as a trio.
Mr. Trick takes up the role of Little Bad early in the season, acting as the mastermind behind several plans, until he joins up with The Mayor and performs the role of his right-hand man. This is the case up until Consequences, when Faith kills him, and replaces him as The Mayor's right-hand man. She takes on his narrative role as The Dragon - powerful assistant to the Big Bad; the Darth Vader to his Emporer Palpatine.
Scott Hope's purpose in the show is to demonstrate Buffy's lingering guilt over killing Angel, and her difficulty moving on from that. It is shown that she has some fondness for him, but that her trauma gets in the way of building a proper relationship with him: see the scene where he gifts her the ring, and she instantly flashes back to Angel - history repeating itself.
They break up in Homecoming, after Angel's return (which she hides from him) results in Buffy appearing distant and non-communicative. At the end of that episode, Faith verbally destroys Scott by embarassing him in front of his date, and excises him from the narrative: he is never seen again after this moment.
From this point on, Faith takes on Scott's role as the doomed alternate love interest, who unintentionally repeats the trauma of Angel. Buffy and Faith become close in the next couple of episodes, but in Revelations we see Buffy again be distracted and somewhat ambivalent with Faith, as she endeavours to hide Angel's return. This lack of communication is what causes a split in their relationship that they never really recover from. Episodes like Amends and Bad Girls show Faith and Buffy becoming closer again, but they also show Buffy leaving Faith in order to tend to Angel.
Through this lens, we can conclude that Buffy may have had some romantic feelings for Faith, just as she did for Scott, but that these were made irrelevant by her continuing guilt and need to keep tending to Angel. Part of the reason that they break up is that Angel recognises how their relationship is an impedient to Buffy forming healthy bonds with others. This comes to a climax when Faith's recreates the events of S2 with Angelus, and again in the finale Buffy is forced to both kill her former love interest in order to save others (though not before giving them a kiss). Again, history repeating itself in front of Buffy's eyes.
"It was too late, and I had to. So I told him that I loved him... and I kissed him... and I killed him." - Buffy Summers, 3x03 Faith Hope and Trick
"Give me the speech again, please. 'Faith, we're still your friends. We can help you. It's not too late.'" "It's way too late." - Faith Lehane and Willow Rosenberg, 3x19 Choices
"Okay then. Give us a kiss." Buffy punches her in the jaw. - Faith Lehane, 3x21 Graduation Day
"You did it. You killed me." -Faith Lehane, 3x21 Graduation Day
As we find out in S7, Scott's relationship with Buffy was complicated by the reveal that he was hiding his sexuality, and his last impact was to spread rumours about hers. I'll just leave that one there for y'all.
