Some agent in the middle of a Serpent's Hand and Prometheus Labs break in: BRIGHT!
Evelyn, Claire, David, Mikell, Tamlin, Yoric, Serra, TJ, Jack, Adam, Nobody and Claire II: YOU'RE GONNA NEED TO GET MORE SPECIFIC THAN THAT
As a teacher I run across many heart breaking situations. (Story for Bright AU) PT 7
“Ms. Ross! Ms. Ross! Momma!” Tammy woke to the words fizzling away as she woke. “Yavanna?” She asked sleepily hearing the child giggle and Jo’s tail thump against the bed. “Can I help you make waffles for breakfast?” The woman opened her eyes to see the little girl’s bright eyes pleading at her. It had been three days since her hospital visit and she had been such a sick little girl. Tammy had even considered calling Kandomere but hadn’t seen or heard from him since the night Yavanna came home and they... no, she pushed the thought out of her mind. She focused on the child, feeding the little girl broth and made sure she had her medicine and cool cloths for her fevers. “Hmmm... how are you feeling?” Placing her hand to small forehead she smiled, the fever hasn’t returned. “I feel better! And I’m hungry.” Tammy smirked and rolled over to see the time. “Yavanna, it’s 4 in the morning!” Just as she looked at the child, her small stomach let loose the grumble of a full grown hungry man. “Well, that settles it.” The woman laughed and grabbed the girl, pulling her close and tickling her. “No! Momma! No fair!” Both froze, Tammy’s arms pulling her into a hug. Hearing Yavanna call her momma made her feel so peacefully happy and complete. But she had to focus, a lot of children in her classroom have called her momma from time to time. “It’s okay. I’m not trying to take her place, I just want to be someone you can count on.” The little girl wrapped her arms around her neck and without words being spoken the woman knew just what this child needed. “If you want to call me ‘momma’, you can.” Yavanna pulled back with a face splitting smile. “Let’s make some waffles momma! I’m hungry!” As the little girl yelled joyfully the excited German Shepherd joined in with a howl. “How can I say no to you two?” With giggles the two left the bedroom for the kitchen with a happily grunting Jo following them.
“So, there isn’t much information on our agent. That’s interesting.” Reiner took in Ravian and Odan as they knelt in front of him. Odan spoke lifting his eyes to his superior, “He is an elf whom decided many years ago that all races should know justice, not just his own. Word from our sources say he had hunted Layla for 20 years, maybe more. A disgrace to all elves.” A deep chuckle filled the dark room. “Perhaps we need to look elsewhere than these sources. There is information all around us, knowing where to look is key.” He stood leaving the two to look out the window at the view of Elf Town.
Ravian lifted her head, “Have you heard from the Owl?” He scoffed at the female’s question, “No. Like chess we must be calculated in our moves or we will find ourselves corned. Though I am rather frustrated with the lack of information coming in.” He turned to face the couple, “Stand my kin.” Both stood and waiting for his orders. “Make contact with the woman who has my offspring. Gain her trust. Find out what you can about this elven agent. Do not attempt at taking the child, this is delicate and if our hand is tipped to early all will be for not.” Both nodded their understanding. “Do not make me regret this decision.” “Never.” With that the two left the room without a word being spoken until they were alone in their vehicle. “Why must we wait Odan. We can easily overpower the human woman and take the child.” He took a deep breath, he was confused as well but he also knows Reiner has been around a very long time. “No. He knows what he is doing. He’s here while others have failed.” She nodded and they headed home to rest before making contact with their target.
The blue haired MTF agent watched the sunrise through his condo window. He hasn’t gotten much sleep but when has he ever. This is different though, he has checked his phone more in the past couple days than ever before. Wanting to see a message or voicemail from a name that never showed. Thoughts of a sick child and her guardian filled his mind. Are they okay? Is Yavanna feeling better? Is Tammy getting enough rest? It’s Christmas break for the school so they aren’t having to get out unless they have to. Christmas. He looked at his watch, the date showed the 19th. He took a deep breath and closed his eyes, in his life wondering has never accomplished any thing. He turned from the window and walked to the dresser to pick up his phone and hit a contact. “Hello?” He smiled at her greeting and the happy noises of a child and barking dog in the back ground. “Hello Tammy.” “Kandomere, how are you? I was starting to worry something happened.” Before he could answer he heard the squeals of Yavanna, “Kandy’er! Kandy’er!” There is no way he would ever get tired of hearing that. “Hold on, she has to say hi.” He smiled as Tammy turned the phone over to the little girl. “Kandy’er! Where are you? Momma made waffles and she let me help! Jo jumped on the table and spilt the syrup but she licked it up before momma could clean it.” He chuckled at how fast she was talking and relieved she was feeling better. Wait, she called Tammy momma? “You’re busy so early this morning. How are you feeling?” He listened with a smile as she told him about waking Tammy up but that smile dropped when she told him how Tammy was giving her soup and sleeping on the floor by her bed. She had taken care of this child alone, without help. “I’m glad you feel better, can I talk to Ms. Ross?” “Okay! Bye Kandy’er!” He heard the phone being passed again, “She has boneless energy this morning.” He cut her whatever else she was going to say. “Why didn’t you call me? You know I’m here and I will help.” She bit her lip and told Yavanna she was stepping into the living room before answering. “I didn’t call because I knew you were busy and you need rest Kandomere. I hate seeing you run on fumes.” He closed his eyes, as always she was looking out for him. “She’s calling you ‘momma’. Are you alright with that?” He had to change the subject, this call is about them not him. “She wants to and I like it. Actually I love it.” She giggled lightly and he smiled taking in the sound. “I’m glad you both are doing well. I’ll check in after..” he heard Yavanna scream and become hysterical, “Momma! Momma! Don’t let them take me! Momma! Kandy’er!” He was in the car driving towards the house before he had let Tammy know he was on his way. “There’s no one here. I don’t know why she is so upset.” At that moment he heard Jo growling and barking. “Kandomere. Please hurry.” He almost shuddered at the trembling in her voice. “I’m coming. Hide! Now!” He hung up and called called the officer keeping watch over the house. When the phone picked up he asked, “What do you see?” Confused the officer looked around, “Agent Kandomere? I don’t see anything out of the ordinary.” He nearly growled when he ordered the officer inside the house. The man jumped out of the car and ran to the door as the elf told him where to find the key to get in. Putting the key in caused the knob to turn and he walked through, “The door was unlocked , sir.”

Just as Kandomere’s lips claimed Tammy’s his phone rang. Pulling away he pulled it out of his breast pocket and answered curtly. His eyes never left hers as he listened for a moment and answered with a “Fine.” That look was one she knew all to well, “Duty calls.” With a small smile she adjusted his tie. “I’ll keep you updated. Get some rest, Yavanna will be a sleep for a while with the medicine. Lock the door when I leave and do not open it for anyone. Do you understand?” The look she gave him showed she did so he walked past her to the kitchen to get his jacket. “I will keep you updated. I promise.” With that he opened the door and left leaving Tammy alone in the living room drowning in her thoughts of the worst. She turned out the lights one by one and entered her bedroom to feel how lonely it was now. He kissed her. Her friend, the elf agent who had been helping her with Yavanna had kissed her. Her lips still tingled from the warmth of his but his actions after taking the call filled her with confusion. She hasn’t thought of pursuing any relationship besides friendship with Kandomere. How could she? An elf even as just as Kandomere wouldn’t. Would he? Tammy turned out the light and crawled under the covers letting the exhaustion take over. Her thought of if she had locked the door was drowned out by the thick blanket of sleep.
Across the city in one of the oldest mansions sat an elf, Reiner. He, along with 10 others were in a large dining room surrounded by the most elegant of furnishings. The silence would be deafening for any human but this was the setting the male preferred. Silent patience. He paid no mind to others at the moment but his sense could still detect their loyalty to him. The infernie took a hard hit with Layla’s wand being taken by the mtf but there was still a chance at getting the upper hand. Reiner’s bright green eyes stayed closed yet focused. He could see them all sitting around him, his right hand, Erwinian sat in the chair on his right reading the paper. Next to him sat his brothers, Armin and Lakin. Finally Ryker took the last seat on that side of the table. To Reiner’s left was Davi and his brother Mando. Followed by Lanakin and Ginji. Odan and his wife Ravian sat in a love seat against the wall the door was at. Yes, their loyalty will be used to it’s fullest. His thoughts were interrupted by his phone chiming. Looking nothing short of bored he answered, “Reiner.” His expression giving nothing away with his answer to whom ever was on the other end of the call. “Very good.” Ten pairs of eyes turned to him as his deep voice broke the stagnant atmosphere. He sat the phone down and addressed his company. “It seems we’ve had a bit of unexpected delay.” At speaking he stood, his presence commanding attention. “My offspring has been seen at an elven hospital. Striking now would only jeopardize her health. We wait a little longer. The Owl will give us the signal.
“I still do not trust this... individual. It’s as if we are being stalled purposely.” Sneered Ravian. She as well as her husband have become impatient with this situation. Reiner focused his eyes on her, “Patience is key when the Dark Lord is concerned. Practice that my dear. You as well Odan.” Both nodded, accepting the mild scolding from their superior. “However..” Reiner continued, “I understand the urge. I want you both to use this energy to find out what you can on the agent over seeing this human and my offspring. Find out what he knows but do not engage.” Odan and Ravian stood bowing their heads to him. Erwinian then spoke, “Reiner, this agent is skilled. He...” Reiner raised his hand cutting his second in command off. “I have spoken.” Erwinian bowed his head respectfully and the couple left to start their mission.
Kandomere at that time had entered the MTF and was met by Montahugh. “Do we have any leads on who it is?” The red head looked tiredly at his boss, “No. We couldn’t get them to stay on the line for a trace.” The elf looked him as they entered the elevator to take them to their office, “Them?” The man nodded his head, “Yeah. We haven’t identified the voice changer they’re using so we have no idea if it’s a man or a woman.” “I see.” The doors opened and the pair made their way to their office. As Montahugh closed the door Kandomere continued. “I want to keep a 24 hour surveillance on Tammy and Yavanna. We know Reiner is here but he’s keeping a very low profile.” The red head scratched his beard, “This isn’t how Layla and her team of killers acted. She never let anyone know where she was. What’s the deal with this Reiner?” The elf took his partner’s question into careful consideration. “Layla needed the wand to resurrect the Dark Lord, he may not. If he isn’t in need of a wand Reiner wouldn’t be concerned about anyone knowing the area he’s in. This enables him to blend in and flex the power he has..” “Damn.” Kandomere looked at his partner, “Yes. And he can potentially be more of a danger than he already is if he get what he wants.” Montahugh shook his head, “Yavanna.” The elf needn’t answer, his partner had it figured out so he looked out the window at the city. It looked so peaceful but the elf could feel the storm brewing. This maybe the last stand the nine races have against the infernie and the dark lord. Thoughts of Tammy filled his mind, her smile, laugh, honesty. She had never been one to fling herself at him, instead she saw him, Kandomere, for who he is. A loyal friend and now he had raised the stakes. He could feel her lips against his in that instant and he hope beyond hope he hadn’t damaged what they had. Seeing Yavanna so sick and Tammy fulfilling the roll of mother had made him proud but it was in that moment he knew, he could sense she would die for this child. That thought alone scared him and in a laps of judgment he showed her. Hopefully without putting a target on her back.

Tammy entered Yavanna’s room and felt her forehead. She had been coughing all night and now she feels like she’s burning up. “Come on honey, wake up.” The child rubbed her eyes sleepily before having another coughing fit. Tammy grabbed her phone and looked at Kandomere’s number, she wasn’t sure if she could call him. He’s been so good at keeping an eye on her and Yavanna all while he’s working. She pressed his number without realizing it as Yavanna had a another coughing fit. She could hear his voice over the phone and put it to her ear, “Kandomere, she’s burning up and her coughing is getting worse. I just didn’t know if the ER would treat her because she’s half...” He cut her off, “I’ll meet you at the Elvin ER. Get her there now. I’ll call the agent on surveillance and have him escort you.” He hung up before she could say thank you.
“Come on bug, Let’s get you to the car.” Tammy wrapped her in a blanket and as she walked out the front door she told Jo to watch the house.
Finally getting her in the car, the agent came around and asked if he could help with her. Tammy told him she was already in so he jumped in his vehicle and they sped to the hospital. Yavanna’s coughing was getting worse, Tammy was torn in between staying behind the agent or speeding around him. Before she could make the decision her phone rang. “Bring her through the ER doors, the doctors are ready for her.” Yavanna began coughing again, this time sounding as though she was gasping for breath. “Yavanna, hold on baby. Just listen to me, take a breath and breathe out. 1,2,3, breathe in and breathe out, 1,2,3, breathe in and breathe out.” Kandomere listened as Tammy calmed the child’s fit and regain getting steady breaths. He was amazed at how much control she had over the situation. “I see you pulling in, I’ll get her out of the car.”
Yavanna was laughing with doctor as he made funny faces at the blue haired agent. It was a relief to hear her, to know she could breathe. Tammy giggles and pull the child closer to her. Kandomere turned and caught the doctor in mid act, only moving his eyes to Yavanna who now had a ‘You’re busted’ look on her face. “All games aside, she is going to be okay? This was only a mild attack?” The doctor, now knowing he would live, nodded. “Yes, the pollen count has been high and with her being a half bree... half human her bronchial tubes are more susceptible to becoming inflamed causing an asthma attack.” The little girl looked up at Tammy as she kissed her head and followed her eyes to Kandomere. She smiled a toothy smile and reached out her arms, “Kandy’er!” The agent smiled and picked her up asking if she felt better. Tammy couldn’t help but notice how tired he looked, the bags under his eyes darker than ever. Guilt weight on her for calling but she was relieved he was there.
“Alright little one, you can go home.” The doctor said as he came in. Yavanna giggles and yelled as the doctor gave Tammy the discharge papers and prescription. “Thank you doctor.” The nice funny doctor was now gone, he stared daggers at her and turned on his heels walking away reminding her of the racism between elves and humans.
Kandomere placed Yavanna in her seat and turned to Tammy. “Don’t look that way. I told you to call me for anything.” She looked away to the little girl before looking back to him, “You look so tired. I just didn’t know where I could take her.” He brought his palm to her cheek and traced it with his thumb. “Let me drive you home. I’ll catch a ride with the agent back here to my car.” She didn’t argue and gave him the keys. “Thank you. For everything.”
Once at the house Yavanna wanted Kandomere to put her to bed, so off they went as Tammy made some coffee. It was late and she had already text her superintendent and principal letting them know what was going on and she wouldn’t be in. She sat down with her cup and decided a three day weekend would be long enough a rest before going back to school. The blue haired agent joined her moments later and gave a smile at the cup she had made for him. “Thank you.” He sat down with a long exhale and took a sip. “Do you ever rest Kandomere? Really rest, like sleep?” He chuckled at her question. “It’s hard to.” “Because of us?” He took another sip instead of answering, that was her answer. “Stay. I want you to get some sleep.” His silver eyes met hers and he gave a soft smile. “Come.” He stood and took her hand leading her to her bedroom. “I’ll sleep after I do one more thing.” She cocked her head at him, “Wha...” Her words were cut off when he took her in his arms and hugged her tight. “For the first time in a long time, I was afraid tonight.” He voice was gentle and shaky. She wrapped her arms around him and held on to him, “Me too.” Reaching a hand, he tipped her chin up and brushed his lips against hers. “I’ll always be here.” The words were muttered against her sensitive skin causing goosebumps to cover her. “I know.” She whispered back before he covered her mouth with his own.
