I hit a special number of followers today.

The thing that they're tracking down is a meme. Not the sort that you know - like Good Guy Greg, or Bad Advice Mallard, or one of those numerous posters you see throughout the web. Those are examples of memes, but not the concept, that is trying to break into reality. A repeated idea that births upon itself by spreading through the minds of others.

Driven by survival, the concept itself lacks conscience or any other human value, construct. It will break down into data and dissipate into nothingness - or more accurately, return to the mass of 'randomness' that constitutes entropy - and so its goal is to break into reality and find a host. A patient zero, from which it can spread to other minds and replicate until it becomes a being far too massive to destroy. If it goes viral, it is possible for it to infect an entire country overnight.

The reason why Lara keeps hearing voices because it's luring Lara, as a paranormal-sensitive medium. Once Lara is close enough, it plans to communicate with Lara and through that link, ensnare her mind and literally turn her brains into mush.
