A/N: It changes POVs from Reader to Simon several times. There are large gaps showing that but if it’s difficult to tell, please comment and I will add indicators.
Chapter 7
You were surprised when a few more items arrived for you over the next few weeks.
The first being a large gift card to the local hardware store with a small piece of paper stating To your name, From Simon. The message being “I know it’s going to look great when I see you next”. It made you blush at his confidence in your plan and, you guess, as an employee..? This felt wrong. He gave you his debit card which you put in your dresser and haven’t touched.
The next box received contains hardback versions of your well-loved paranormal romance novels. They were pristine, brand new. Some were even first print editions. Tears came to your eyes at the amazing and expensive gift. “Why? Why? Wha—?”
A month passed and you didn’t hear from Simon. You sent him a text anyway, “Just checking in. Hope you’re staying safe. I expect you to come back home alive and functional at bare minimum.”
Interestingly enough that same day, you received another package. It contained the expensive, long use versions of gardening tools, thorn resistant gloves, a kneeling board, and a tool belt for it all. You gasped and grinned, jumping up and down. You punched the air excitedly, having always wanted this brand. It took a while for you to calm down. You sent a quick text to Simon thanking him, “Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou. I love them!”. You sent a picture of all the items in the tool belt. It made your freaking week to get these. You were smiling every day you worked on the property. It made you feel so confident. You knew your make him happy with what you were going to do.
Ghost, sitting in a safehouse until time to do the next part of the ops in two days, got your text and smiled behind his balaclava at your messages and images. He didn’t respond and made sure it never turned to read, but it warmed him nonetheless. He wonders if you got the books or other items he ordered by now. He hopes they make you happy and help you pass the time.
“Aye, whit ya starin’ et, LT?” Soap queries, walking over to sit next to him on the couch.
“Joos lookin’ t’see if mah packages made it t’my ‘ouse,” he explained.
“Whid ya orduh?” He asked, peering at his phone.
“Books and tools fer me flatmate,” he informed him.
“Birthday?” Soap inquired.
“Nah. Joos ‘cuz,” he admitted.
Soap smirked and knocked his shoulder into Ghost. Ghost looked at him with an unseen, quirked brow.
“Ya like ‘er,” he stated. Ghost rolled his eyes, hard.
“C’mon, LT. They coot and coorvie in ah the riigh’ places,” he pointed out.
“Feir mah employee now. Can’t fink like fat,” Ghost apprised.
“Damn.” Soap squeezed his shoulder and went to finish walking the parameter.
You’re standing on the porch smiling at the progress made with the backyard. The mixed grass is coming in nicely and you’re not allergic to these types. You added a few shade trees and bought a swing that is sitting under one of them. You’re hoping when the roots do take hold, they don’t cause too much erosion or disturbance of the land. You sit down on the steps feeling proud. Snap a picture and text it to Simon, hoping it’ll put a smile on his face when he sees it.
You send him a few more images of the yard before to show progress, making sure to put the dates in each text. You, then, decide to send him a silly picture of Ralph and you with the message “Miss ya. Stay safe. ❤️”
It’s nearly two in the morning and Simon can’t sleep. His brain is too busy going over details and making notes to put into the mission files. He’s been awake for nearly three days. His focus is challenging right now with how tired he is. He lays down without his gear at least and pulls out his cell. He turns it on and waits.
The moment his phone shows his message delivery and sees it’s from you, he grins. Looking at each text and image helps him relax. When he sees the message on your silly photo, his chest tightens at your words.
Staring at those words, he whispers, “Promise, pretty dove. I’m coming home.” He mentally finished with “to you”.
Two days later, you decide to look at the one dating app you have on your cell with a heavy sigh, “It’s just a crush. I mean look at the guy. How can someone not find him attractive?”
Every attractive man and woman where you read their profile, they aren’t looking for a serious relationship. They’re looking for casual or fun. With a roll of your eyes, you groan, “Just get on grinder or hinge, you idiots.”
The next profile you find a cute, natural blonde with bright brown eyed man who wears metal-rimmed glasses with a wide, toothy smile. You scroll down to find he’s looking for a long-term relationship. Continuing down, it seems you two have much in common for likes and dislikes. “He’s a geek and an engineer?” You grin and like his profile. You send him a message “Hi, saw you play pathfinder and d&d. What’s your favorite class and why?”
You’ve been texting the guy from your dating app for the last three days straight. His name is Sebastian Miller. He makes you laugh and seems to enjoy geeking out with you. He turns on the shows when you let him know what you’re watching. You reciprocate and always end up discussing what’s on.
You sent him a picture of your garden project.
Sebastian ❤️: You did that?!!! 😍 🤯
You: lol! It took me a while to plan it out. Had to figure out what was already on property and did some soil analysis to figure out what I needed to do to make sure the land was healthy before I could do the yard.
Sebastian: And you don’t do this professionally?
You: My roommate said I should do that before I even pulled all the weeds out of his yard.
Sebastian: Wait. That’s his yard? Your roommate?
You: Yeah. He’s military and isn’t here much. Didn’t want to leave his house empty and I needed to be closer to my work at the time. Full disclosure: He’s actually paying me to do this. 😂
Sebastian: You need to bill him top dollar.
You: lol! Oh! Let me show you the front yard. That’s done.
You sent the final image of the front yard. It’s a pollinator garden with a few flowers to deter wasps from hanging out.
Sebastian: 🤯 😍Gorgeous.
You: 😊 Thank you. It’s a pollinator garden. It’ll attract bees and hummingbirds and butterflies. Hopefully not wasps since I included marigolds among other plants. Those things need to die a painful death.
Sebastian: 🤣
You: Those fuckers hurt, man. I’m not allergic but they’re just as bad as jellyfish stings imo.
Sebastian: So, you like the beach? 🏖️🙂
Your first date is about a week and a half later in town at a hibachi restaurant.
He walks you to Simon’s truck, not that Sebastian needs to know that yet. “That was yummy and fun. Don’t go spoil me now. Don’t want to set a precedent." You 😏, trying to tease and be flirty.
“Oh, I’m gonna spoil you. Get used to it,” he teased back.
You leaned back against the truck and he stepped into your space. Your hand goes against his chest. “I take things slowly. So you know.”
“Ok,” he easily states, still smiling. He rested his hand on the metal of the truck above the window. “May I kiss you?”
You grin wide at him and nod.
The next day, you wake in your room with a smile. You take your phone off your charger and open it up to find a text message from Sebastian. “Morning, beautiful.”
Your face warms at the compliment, and replies back, “Morning, sunshine. Please tell me you made coffee?”
Sebastian replied, “Ofc, I did. Can’t live without coffee. Need more coffee in my veins than blood, you know?”
You giggle, grinning. “Same. I have my own expression machine, so I have amazing coffee in the mornings. Jealous? lol.”
Sebastian just replies with emojis, “👀‼️💍”.
You laugh out loud, replying as you go make your coffee. “Dude, we just met, but happy to make you some espresso sometime. You must bring good Kona coffee though. A minimum of 10% Kona. 😉😜.”
Sebastian immediately agreed.
Sebastian begins a new normal for you. Texts in the morning. Phone calls in the evening. Weekly date nights. A few weeks in, Raphaela wants to know about him, of course. You tell her, all excited, about him and how the dates have been.
Meanwhile, Ghost is laying down on a roof top with ass sweat looking through a sniper scope keeping an eye on Soap and Gaz. Oddly, his mind wanders to the book of yours he borrowed and is reading for the third time. He can’t wait for the kid magician to meet the “demon” his teacher will summon. With a mental shake, he refocuses.
“Am boored as fuck,” Soap complains into comms.
“If you’re my brother but I’m not your brother, who am I?” Ghost posed. Silence fell for nearly a minute before Gaz answered, “I am your sister.”
Soap complains, “I almost had that.” Gaz and Ghost scoff at him.
Soap begs, “Gimme another.”
Ghost smirks. “Ok. I have pointed fangs, and I sit and wait. I have piercing force, and I crunch with weight. I grab my victims, but they do not fight. I join them each with a single, quick bite. What am I?”
“Tha’s ‘ard, LT,” whines Soap.
“A stapler,” answers Captain Price. “I use one nearly every day I’m in my office. That was a good one.”
“Fank ya, Cap.”
