Final Legacy

Old video games introduced many of the basic concepts and genres that are still used today, which were refined over time. Platformer shooters still exist for example – see Cuphead. Beat-em-ups still exist as well, such as Super Crush K.O. or even The Wonderful 101, both of which put original twists on that genre’s style of gameplay. There are also the games which are credited with birthing or popularizing a genre, such as Wizardry or Ultima, among the earliest dungeon crawlers and RPGs in existence.

To a modern gamer, playing the oldest examples of such genres might be like watching the movie Halloween or TV show Seinfeld – the ideas that they pioneered have since been copied and refined many times over, so much so that the progenitors look bland by comparison.

But some old games tried ideas that were not only original, but not truly copied since. Final Legacy, developed by Atari themselves, is a game that innovated for its time, and is based around a concept that could well be considered original by modern standards. It lacks the polish of modern games, but its originality makes it stick out both for the time and even now.

Genregender Pride Flag

Genregender: when your gender is related to certain genre(s) of writing in some way. Also an umbrella for any genric gender identity, such as fantagender and scifigender, literary subgender examples.

Similar to bookgender, it stands more for literature’s genres than music, film/television/movie and video game genres, since there are already terms for them, such as moviegender, showgender, musigender and gamegender.

THE COLLECTION

If I didn’t know any better, it seems that cassette walkman’s are making a small comeback. Not only does Bullseye use it in Season 3 of DAREDEVIL, but the device also plays a crucial role in this short film. Horror shorts about serial killers is hardly a novel idea as you can easily stumbled onto a batch of them with a quick Google search. Finding one that’s well-made and worth your time however, is a trickier task. Thankfully the directing team of  Carlos Baena, Carlos Puertolas and Rani Naamani, do just enough with the direction and story twist. to make this better-than-average fare!

So, I’m testing this out. I’m trying to hold myself accountable this year on practicing every level of creativity I have flowing in my body. The previous years I focused on photography. I am still working harder than ever to push those skills further, but I also want to explore other avenues, and fuse the two creatives that I love (word + vision). Having said that I’m going to try my very best to be active and get this 30-day blog challenge up. Instead of just writing shit, I will also put up a photo that I feel relates to my post.

 Anyway, cutting the bullshit and diving straight in to it... Here we go:

DAY ONE: YOUR BLOGS NAME - U DON’T KNOW MY NAME?

To all my hip hop heads, if it isn’t clear enough.. then are you really a hip hop head? Jk.

But seriously, if you don’t already know, my name “joycedafivetwo” is a play on rapper (underrated legend) Royce Da 5′9. My real name is ‘Joyce’ rhymes with Royce. I’m not exactly 5′9, but standing pretty at 5′2.. and when you put that together, you have my Blog/Twitter/Instagram/Facebook etc etc etc handle.

I’ve had a lot of nicknames in the past. One that still sticks by me with some friends til this very day is “Jigga” Joyce est. 2000. I also had the privilege of being called “deeejoyce” a name I used for quite some time, it was a play on the word ‘DJ’ known to be the one playing the jams at every party.. also an abbreviation for ‘Drunk Joyce,’ which was also a very prominent thing for me at every party. I think it comes to no surprise that hip hop... no, music in general.. plays a big role in my life.

I’ve had the luxury of exploring music beyond my time, having a brother who is eight years my senior. He introduced me to the soothing harmonies of R&B vocals like BoyzIIMen, Jodeci, TLC, New Edition, Shanice, Mary J. Blige, Xscape, En Vogue, Immature, Aaliyah, Janet, Total... just to name a few. He also introduced me to hip-hop with Maestro’s ‘Drop the Needle’ vinyl, and eventually westcoast gangster sounds like Daz Dillinger, NWA, DJ Quik, Warren G, Nate Dogg, Kurupt, Tupac, Snoop, Roscoe, Xzibit. (I know majority of these rappers aren’t from LA but they did bring that sound, so ehhh!)

My dad was musical in a sense where I knew every soft rock song out there from the Beatles to Air Supply.. every soulful track by the Stylistics to Motown.. the painful cries of Bon Jovi and so on.

Not only did my dad have a diverse taste in music, his side of the family were and still are a class of talented jazz musicians from trained pianists to expert saxophone players, you name it!

I also explored underground hip hop on my own, falling in love with the rap sounds from New York and Philadelphia like Jay-Z, Jamal, Heltah Skeltah, Wu, Big L, Black Thought, Bahamia, 88-Keys, Afrika Bambaataa, Lord Finesse and the list goes on and on and on. I had an emo-punk phase where all my heart bled for songs by Weezer and Dashboard Confessional. Let’s also not forget those damn boy bands in the mid 90s/early 2000s.

I have adjusted to the current times and am in awe in what the world of music has to offer now. It’s an evolution of different genres in to one. Independent artists now have platforms where their creations can be heard and appreciated. Indie labels/collectives like Stonesthrow, Soulection.. are giving these artists opportunities to be heard worldwide.

So.. ergo.. Every genre has a place in my heart because I feel that music intertwines. There is no sound that isn’t influenced by something else, somewhere else. Music is a collage of different inspirations and I think that’s why it’s important to me to keep that lifestyle, that way of thinking constantly in motion.

As simple a concept of playing with rapper’s names to make a social media handle, it is also a light-hearted reminder of the things I love.

And you can’t beat that with a bat! (Black Sheep)
