Getting captured in front of their team

whumper purposely targeting whumpee when they are with their team so reaffirm the knowledge that they are never safe

the team being unable to help because they are across the battle field, or because whumpee has a weapon to their head and they can’t risk it

whumpee desperately turning and twisting, frantically screaming for their team mates

whumper mocking the team’s efforts into whumpee’s ear: “Did you really think they would be able to stop me?” “All this time you’ve been free because I let you be. They could never have stopped me.” “Say goodbye, Whumpee.”

the last thing whumpee sees before passing out is either their team fighting for them, or standing shell shocked as they cant do anythingwithout risking whumpee’s life

upon waking up in captivity, whumpee screams at whumper and demands to know if they hurt their team. whumper plays along and 1. says they are all dead, 2. says they have captured one and kept as leverage, or 3. just grins.

team returning to their base of operations, unable to form a word when whumpee’s partner approaches, their smile slowly dwindling as they repeatedly ask “Where is Whumpee?”

“Look, I know it seems counterintuitive, but, when you’ve never been free, when every decision has been made for you, when you have no idea what you’re supposed to do or why, restriction can feel like freedom. He needs these rules so he can start making safe decisions.”

“But how far do we go? What if we go too far and he won’t tell us that there’s something wrong? We could hurt him worse by trying to help…”

“Right now he’s terrified to move, he won’t get out of bed or drink water or speak without permission, we’re more likely to miss something without rules. And he deserves to feel like he’s not just flying blind, waiting for one of us to beat the shit out of him. He’s already aware that there are rules to the world, he just doesn’t know what they are and which ones are going to hurt.”

“So where do we start?”

“We start with what he needs to be doing. Bedtimes and what time to wake up in the morning, when to eat, what to eat, meds to take and when-“

“It’s not like he’s a child, and god if he wants to sleep in, shouldn’t we let him? If he wants to eat a midnight snack, doesn’t he deserve to decide that?”

“Yes. But right now he’s not sleeping in, he’s hiding in bed because he doesn’t know if it’s safe to get up. He’s not eating because he doesn’t know if he’s allowed, he’s not making any of those decisions because he can’t even exist yet without being fucking terrified. If we can get him on a routine, he can relax enough to hopefully start to trust us.”

“I know that, I know he needs some framework, but what if he takes these rules too deeply? What if they get too deep? Then we’ve just upgraded his prison instead of actually getting him out and safe.”

“We’re gonna have to be careful. That’s the only thing we can do with any of this.”

Two caretakers who suddenly find/are left in charge of a small child whumpee. Caretaker A has no idea how to comfort a child, much less how to help one through injuries and trauma.

But Caretaker B has much experience, whether that be with siblings, their own children, or other whumpees.

Caretaker A watches, stunned, as Caretaker B swoops Whumpee, so small and frail, effortlessly into their arms. Caretaker B cradles Whumpee, a hand laid gently over the back of their head as they burrow and cry into their shoulder, the other arm wrapped securely underneath them, holding them close to their chest. They bob Whumpee up and down softly, whispering comforting words into their ear.

Caretaker A has a lot to learn.

Teammates/Found Family witnessing Whumpee, whom they've just met, being harmed in some way and going absolutely feral in perfect unison without even having to think twice about it

A group of friends trying to patch Whumpee’s wounds on their abdomen. Whumpee being either really strong or not human, needing to have all four friends holding them down on the couch.

Two are each holding an arm above Whumpee’s head, while the other two are each seated on their thighs trying to keep them still while they get to work on the wounds. Whumpee a writhing, sweaty, groaning mess.

Whumpee who was taken by multiple Whumpers, but when they got rescued, only one of them got caught. The other Whumpers managed to get Caretakers or the Teams trust while Whumpee was missing, pretending to care about Whumpee.

One day while Whumpee was recovering, they find one of the Whumpers talking with someone from the team, and they begin to panic. Both of them are confused by this reaction (Except the Whumper), and this reaction only gets worse when other Whumper walks in the room. Leadings to Whumpee freezing up for a moment then running away from them. The Whumpers act just as confused as the Team Member, while knowing why. And whenever Whumpee tries to tell someone who they are and what they did to them, no one believes them.

Caretaker walks into unconscious Whumpee's hospital room just as the doctor is extubating them and flips out because they think the doctor is taking them off life support

Caretaker realizes they're simply not prepared enough to help Whumpee all alone so they bring in another Caretaker to assist them in helping Whumpee. However, this new Caretaker now needs to earn Whumpee's trust before they'll accept their help.

that's one of my favourite things, honestly. when there's multiple caretakers. when there's a network of people who are all doing their best to support each other. maybe there's one person that whumpee is closest to or trusts most, but learning that they can trust other people is a major step in their healing. it's tough and caretaker feels so guilty, but this is- this is good. it helps. it makes things better. for whumpee, too.
