The 17th-century restorer filled in the missing parts to make an Atalanta, the heroine of the Metamorphoses by ... Ovid, who was beaten in a race by Hippomenes. Acquired in Rome by Cardinal Mazarin [1602-1661], the statue was bought in 1665 for the king of France, Louis XIV.
