I Absolutely ADORE The Detail You Can Hear The Pocket Watch Ticking In Mad!
You hear it in the beginning but it shows up again during lead up towards chorus each time and I just love it! I love it so much!
One because the sound of the ticking watch is a good beat for a song, but also what it adds to the whole thing!!!
It adds the hectic rhythm of the song, ties in with the story and Hatter's obsession and shows us audibly that he can't stop thinking about that watch even as he sings, and the fact the watch acts like a chaotic metronome!
I'm sorry I've been listening to this song so much and just had to gush about it. Little details like this make my day!
The song Wish I Were Here is a brilliant example of how talented the writing team of Next to Normal are. It is amazing!
This song is comprised of 3 main time signatures: 6/4 (or 4/4+2/4), which makes up the verses (“in an instant lightning crashes…”), 4/4, which makes up the chorus (“I have lived a life of clouds and gray…”), and 7/4, which makes up the spoken word and bridge portion (“Natalie, what are you doing in my electricity?…”).
The abrupt shifting of time signatures in this song induces a sense of dissonance and discomfort, even among an audience who is unfamiliar with music theory. This allows the audience to empathize further with the struggle of Diana and Natalie as they attempt to manage their mental health conditions in various ways, which really highlights how Next to Normal’s writing portrays the topic of mental health in a manner which is simultaneously empathetic, critical, and informative.
Additionally, the time signatures used in this song may be neatly classified into two categories: that which is ‘normal’, or typical of most western pop/ rock music (4/4, used in the chorus), and that which is ‘abnormal’ or atypical (6/4 and 7/4). By implementing sudden changes from ‘normal’ to ‘abnormal’ time signatures, this song musically represents how Diana and Natalie struggle with fleeting moments of clarity which devolve into worsening symptoms and mental struggle. The use of 7/4 time in the spoken word portion is especially significant because it remains close to clean 4/4 timing, but it is slightly altered by the removal of a beat and the end of phrases. This creates an especially ‘funky’, ‘trippy’ sound (which may be drawn from iconic trippy songs such as Money by Pink Floyd which is also in 7/4 and has a similar bassline), which highlights the mix of euphoria, disorientation, and fear which both Natalie and Diana are experiencing in regards to their ‘treatment’.
These changing time signatures render Wish I Were Here incredibly difficult to sing through, especially considering that this takes place in the second act of N2N. This is just a testament to how outstandingly talented the cast of this show is!
I have so much shit I wanna say about the soundtrack of both games oh my GOD. For the past decade, it has been my favorite video game OST (tied with Minecraft story mode OST they fucking COOKED) BUT the 5 dastardly bombers theme was my absolute favorite boss battle theme of any video game ever. I finally got around to playing R2 and noticed they revisited it briefly in the phase 1 64 battle theme?? My HEARTTTT MY HEART
uh comparison video so people can hear the absolute genius
Anytime I see criticism about the games, if they mention the art or the soundtrack I immediately just ignore it like bro... Bro.......
Personal shit below:
I have,,, THE PHYSICAL COPY OF MY FAVORITE VIDEO GAME SOUNDTRACK EVER😭😭 even after I hid bomberman from myself for YEARS because of people in my life. (Undiagnosed autism in middle school is NOT for the weak) the soundtrack continued to stay. A reminder of something that brought me joy and kept me going even during probably the most traumatic situation I have and maybe ever will have to endure. ESPECIALLY the 5 dastardly bombers theme. Which is why Im so happy it made a cameo in the second came ouuggghhhh
I wanna say though that the dastardly bombers theme is now my 2nd favorite, which got beat by a different bomberman r boss theme😭 FUSELLS THEME BRO it's so good. I may make a post about that later because his boss theme makes me have so many thoughts. Dont get me wrong, the dastardly bombers theme is still iconic as fuck for me
I wish more people knew about R. Like the bomberman franchise isn't niche, but the fandom is so small it can fit in my house 😭 which is a shame because i just love the characters and the art and the soundtrack and everything AND ALL OF IT
I'm not proofreading this I'm just ramblin
Favorite song rn and how would its music video go if it were up to you?
-A.
PS: Right, this is supposed to be anonymous.
One thing about me is i absolutely cannot pick favourites when it comes to music. I love all my children in different but equally valid ways. There are so many songs, artists and albums that are incredibly important to me.That being said it will be to no ones surprise that I'm currently obsessed with Everyone's A Star! Ive had it on loop for weeks now.
Anyway, instead of answering your question properly ill just link some of my top albums from the last few years :)
Ok ill stop now cause i could actually go on forever.
Honorable mention to The French Operation by Girls Be, they took it down from streaming again and i can't link it.
