[Mutability.]
I picked up a leaf today from the sidewalk. This seems childish. Leaf! you are so big! How can you change your color, then just fall! As if there were no such thing as integrity! You are too relaxed to answer me. I am too frightened to insist. Leaf! don’t be neurotic like the small chameleon.
-Frank O'Hara
Am I a woman who devours herself? No, it's that I live in eternal mutation, with new adaptions to my renewed living and I never reach the end of any of the ways of existing. I live from unfinished and vacillating sketches. But I try my best to balance between me and I, between me and others, between me and the God.
Clarice Lispector, A Breath of Life (tr. Johnny Lorenz)
Nothing Gold Can Stay
Robert Frost
Nature’s first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.
Percy Bysshe Shelley "The flower that smiles to-day"
The flower that smiles to-day To-morrow dies; All that we wish to stay, Tempts and then flies. What is this world's delight? Lightning that mocks the night, Brief even as bright.
Virtue, how frail it is! Friendship how rare! Love, how it sells poor bliss For proud despair! But we, though soon they fall, Survive their joy and all Which ours we call.
Whilst skies are blue and bright, Whilst flowers are gay, Whilst eyes that change ere night Make glad the day, Whilst yet the calm hours creep, Dream thou – and from thy sleep Then wake to weep.

Jo Shapcott ~ Of Mutability
Of Mutability
Mutability is the only constant thing in life. Nothing remains forever constant. The great works of art, the Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon succumb to the ravages of time. What is man that in this brief and insignificant life of his, he tries to immortalize and exalt himself? Death and time reduce all to nothing.
