Toji x male reader
Authors note: I’ve been to generous lately. I hope you all enjoy the story. Toji’s been getting too much love lately, so I had to bring some angst back to the scene. Mwahaha.
I’m evil

The stand mixer rattled and buzzed on the counter.
Y/N wiped his powdered sugar–covered hands on his apron, stretching and feeling his joints pop as he let out a relaxed sigh. It was a warm midday afternoon, the pink-and-purple sky was visible through the kitchen window.
A sudden cry rang out from the living area. It was a child—about three years old—who had fallen while playing with her blocks. Y/N was quick to rush over, scooping her up and holding her on his hip, gently rocking her until the tears quieted down.
“No need to cry, Estella. It’s just a small little boo-boo. You have to be strong… like Papa!” he cooed softly. “Wanna help me decorate some cupcakes for Papa, sweetie? He comes back home today from his super duper scary mission!”
Estella giggled, clapping her hands and nodding excitedly. Papa was coming home today. After not seeing him for a loonnnggggg time, she was more than excited. He had been gone for 2 months.
Y/N carried her back into the kitchen, the soft taps of his footsteps echoing throughout the house. He set Estella down on the counter and gently wiped her hands clean before grabbing her child-sized apron and tying it around her. He smiled to himself. She looked absolutely adorable.
Glancing up at the clock on the wall, Y/N sighed. Two hours before Toji was scheduled to come home. Two hours to finish the cupcakes and clean the house.
He could do it.
They could do it.
“Alright, Este. Daddy’s gonna frost the cupcakes, and then you can help by putting on all the sprinkles and decorating them however you want,” Y/N said as he pulled the freshly baked cupcakes from the fridge and lined them up on the counter.
He grabbed piping bags and a tip, opening the stand mixer and preparing the frosting before putting on his game face.
Slowly, carefully, Y/N frosted each cupcake one by one, making sure they all looked perfect—or at least damn near it. When he finished, he gave a small clap of triumph. He slid the trays toward his daughter and laid out bowls of sprinkles and fruit.
Estella immediately went to work, tossing toppings onto the cupcakes with joyful concentration, creating whatever masterpiece her imagination conjured. Y/N watched her for a moment, smiling, before excusing himself to the corner of the kitchen.
He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Toji’s number, just wanting to check in—just to hear his voice.
The call didn’t go through. Straight to voicemail.
It was probably just a service issue.
Still, it didn’t stop the anxiety pooling in his stomach.
Y/N shook the feeling off. He had more important things to focus on. Returning to Estella, he found her happily eating one of the cupcakes.
“Look, Daddy! I finished all the cupcakes like you asked! They’re so tastyyyy!” she cheered happily, licking frosting from her chubby fingers.
“Good job, sweetie. I just know Papa’s gonna love ’em,” Y/N said softly. “Now how about we clean you up and put your toys away? Gotta make sure Papa comes back to a clean house.”
Estella nodded, and Y/N took that as his cue. He grabbed a rag from the sink, wiping frosting from her chubby fingers and face before setting the cupcake tray by the stove so he could clean the island counter.
It took about half an hour to get everything—and everyone—cleaned up and ready for bed. Once finished, Y/N held Estella on his hip and waited by the door.
Toji said he’d be home at 7:00 on the dot.
It was 6:52.
-
Meep
7:15.
Estella was fast asleep against Y/N’s shoulder, her breathing slow and even. Y/N, however, was restless. It wasn’t like Toji to be late—especially not without notice.
Something was wrong.
Very, very wrong.
Another hour passed. Eventually, Y/N carried Estella to her room and tucked her into bed, brushing her hair back gently. She was only three—she didn’t need to worry about why Papa wasn’t home yet.
Once she was settled, Y/N returned downstairs and sank onto the couch.
He would wait.
And wait he did—until sleep finally claimed him sometime around two in the morning.
-
When he woke, he tilted his head toward the clock.
7:30 a.m.
Sunlight peered through the blinds. Y/N didn’t need to be a genius to know Toji still wasn’t home. The signs were everywhere: untouched cupcakes, the kitchen light still on, no blanket pulled over him during the night.
His worst fear had come true.
His husband hadn’t returned from his mission—and he had no idea where he was.
And worst of all…
He had no idea how to tell his daughter that he didn’t know when Papa was coming home.

Author's note: I hope you all enjoyed it. Please leave any tips, comments, or suggestions down below! Lowkey in all honesty, I enjoy writing angst a lot but get sad whenever I post it and reread it.
Also, I got a note in my inbox, saying how I use AI. I just wanted to address that I don't use ai to write my stories. I come up with ideas on my own, and have many drafts, notes, prompt notes, and a video to prove it. The only thing I do use ai for, is to check my spelling and make sure im not making some kind of diabolical critical grammar mistake. Ya know–using ai as a tool like it was originally designed to be used for.!
I can see how that might throw people off, but in reality; I have a lot of Professors who do the same, and even coworkers at my job who do it as well. I'm human, there is nothing wrong with wanting to make sure my spelling and grammar is up to par before I publish any work.
As I stated once before, I am in college, an English major. So I write a lot of papers, and in all honesty I am constantly writing something down. So I believe my writing is not like the typical person who writes fanfic–and I think that's fine. I’ve seen many writers who write with the same style I do, and those who don’t. And I love them all.
So going forward, If you truly do not like my work or think I’m going against some principles you have. Kindly see yourself off my blog. I have too many BIG things coming up this year that I have to worry about. So I don’t have time to address any hate or accusations I’m getting in my inbox.
So let's leave it at that. ૮꒰˶ฅ́˘ฅ̀˶꒱ა
And on that note: I will be taking a hiatus, sometime in february after my birthday to do some much needed wedding planning!!
We have decided on a date: August 3rd. 😖🤗
So around that time, I will not be online, and will more than likely schedule a few posts to be released as it might be about two weeks before I have the time to even think about writing after the wedding.
BUTTTT that will be another conversation for later. Until then..I hope you all have a WONDERFUL, fantastic and beautiful day.
