The Next Step
Donnie grabbed the muffin and orange juice from his mom and gave her a kiss as he headed out the door. He shoved the juice in his bag as he hurried.
"Wait, wait! Take one for Y/N." Rosie reminded him sweetly, handing him another muffin. "Tell her I said have a good day." She said as she walked Donnie to the door and waved goodbye.
"I will, mom." He waved at her and swiftly made his way towards his bus route.
Donnie had to walk a little further now that he was in college and went to a school that was further away from home. But the upside was that he gets to see you and sit on the bus with you every morning. You lived down the street and Donnie usually waited at the front of your gate for you. This morning, though, you were ready and already walking up to Donnie when he neared your place.
"Hey, smelly." He teased.
"Hey, stupid." You greeted back with a smile.
Donnie brought his hand up and held a muffin in your direction, "My mom made it for you."
You hummed in delight and said "Mmm.", wasting no time to bite into the muffin.
"Fuck, your mom must have Martha Stewart in her kitchen, or something. Her stuff is always so delicious." You joked.
"She doesn't need Martha Stewart." He nudged your elbow jokingly and you both giggled.
You and Donnie walked in silence for a few moments, eating your muffins. You had a crush on each other and you both knew it. At least, you felt like you both knew it - but neither of you made a move.
You were scared of ruining your friendship and Donnie was scared of being rejected by you or being seen as weird. The last girlfriend he had was a close friend of his and as soon as they broke up, that was the end of the friendship altogether. Obviously, he didn't want that to happen with you.
So, he took things slow. Friends first, then he'd try to ask you out. And if you say no then you two could stay friends. No harm done.
"Are you excited to turn 21? Do you think your parents will get you a car?" You suddenly asked, referring to his upcoming birthday.
"Yeah, I'll probably get Elizabeth's old car. I can pick you up in the mornings, if I do." He looked at you and smirked.
You smiled, "I could give you gas money if you needed it."
"Nah, thats okay." He nudged your arm, and kept his arm close to yours. "I like getting to school with you. Maybe you can get me a coffee here and there." He joked.
You both laughed and you made a bold move and wrapped your arm around Donnie's and leaned into him. Being close to Donnie felt nice. You were both scared to be physically affectionate with each other because you could only imagine what it would lead to. Donnie's heart raced at how close you were to him.
"You look really pretty today." He said suddenly, looking straight ahead and ignoring your gaze. "Red looks good on you."
"Thanks, Donnie." You blushed and smiled at him.
He looked so handsome. Donnie was wearing a white t-shirt, like he usually does to school, but he always made it look good. He didn't need to wear good clothes or style his hair. Donnie was attractive from the moment he woke up, you were sure. And he felt the same about you. Sometimes he wondered how you looked so beautiful first thing in the morning.
Ever since he started going to college, you've been his closest friend. He used to wait for the bus with a handful of his classmates, but now he only knew you. He wasn't as popular in college, but he didn't mind.
A lot of your friends actually wondered how the two of you became friends. Anyone who didnt know Donnie found him weird.
But you didn't care about anyone else's opinion of him. You knew why you liked him and you didn't need anyone else to agree with you. Plus, they didn't know the real Donnie. The Donnie that crosses the street first, so he can make sure it's clear for you. The Donnie that always follows the gentleman's rule on the sidewalk. How he helped you with any assignment you needed help with. And he didn't just give you the answers - He taught you so you could do it on your own. Nobody bothered to notice the kind heart the Donnie had, but you did.
The wind blew lightly as you and Donnie neared your bus stop. You pulled away from his arm and walked beside him now, straightening your back.
"Hey, um..." Donnie stopped walking and turned to you.
You turned to him and tilted your head in question. His face was red and he didn't meet your eyes.
"Are you doing anything next weekend?" He asked.
You just shook your head at him and he finally looked you in your eyes. You looked at him expectedly and waited for him to continue.
"Well... E is throwing a party. It's nothing official yet, but she'll probably end up doing it. Do you think you'd wanna come?" He asked you, "You could be my date..."
You smiled at him and started nodding your head,
"Yeah! It's a date."
Donnie was going to remember this moment forever. It was the best day of his life, he swore. He even thought maybe he was imagining things again. But this was too real.
"Really?" He kind of expected you to tell him you were joking and to laugh in his face.
"Yeah. Why not?" You shrugged, playing off your excitement. "I'll have the hottest date in school." You nudged his arm with your elbow playfully.
He just chuckled, blushing heavily at your comment. You both sat down as you reached your bus stop and Donnie's hand grazed your pinky as your hands rested closely together. His pinky grazed itself up your pinky and he placed his hand on top of yours, curling his fingers under your palm. Your stomach fluttered at Donnie's move and you both giggled like school girls as your hand wrapped around his fingers.
You couldn't wait for next weekend.
