How to tell your car guy is a good one. Me *notices weird noise car is making while meeting daughter at the auto shop so she she can drop off her car and I can run her home in mine* Me: *pokes head into the shop* “Hey, so Squishy’s making a funny noise. I should make an appointment to bring her in.” Car Guy: *goes outside and listens then turns to me with huge horrified eyes* That is NOT a come back later sound. That’s a you’re not going anywhere until I try to fix this sound.” He immediately dropped what he was doing and wouldn’t even let me drive it into the stop. He turned it off and had his apprentice put it in neutral and steer while he pushed it inside with his truck. Then, he crawled under it on the floor because there were already two vehicles on the hoists and proceeded to give me a much needed oil change and checked to make sure there weren’t engine shavings in the drain pan—thankfully, there weren’t—and put in a new oil filter and all the other things. Then we all crossed our parts that the engine wouldn’t seize when we started it up again. ADHD makes remembering about very occasional tasks—like oil changes—challenging. Very challenging. I need to find a different way to keep track of this stuff, because I ran the car almost dry. But I’m grateful AF for Josh because this could have ended really differently. And this dear man did the work including all the filters and fluids for $20 (because that was all the cash I had on me) and the promise that I’d bring him and his apprentice dinner next time I made pot roast.
