Since today is International Butch Appreciation Day, I guess it’s the perfect time to tell this story. A little background on me, if you didn’t already know I identify as a Butch Lesbian. Recently my mom was at a conference on drug prevention for her job and the topic of LGBTQ+ issues came up. Someone had said something about how Butch is not an appropriate word to use anymore. So my mom informed them that her daughter identifies as a Butch. These people treated her as if she didn’t know what she was talking about and that she was being derogatory towards me. Now my parents aren’t perfect, but they would NEVER use a word to identify me without my permission. They then continued to say that I can’t identify as Butch because “there are different words we use now”. The two women who were insisting this were both lesbians themselves. And the fact that two lesbians in their mid to late 20’s are going around thinking that the way someone identifies is derogatory is ridiculous! I am proud to be a Butch and whatever words I choose to use to describe and identify myself is my business and that needs to be respected.

It would not be cultural appropriation at all because hoodoo is an African American tradition, and it was created by African American people for themselves and others in their community. More thoughts on this here!

Here’s @ohthewitchery ‘s thoughts on this topic, as someone who is a part of that culture and its traditions.

I believe that both can be very effective, depending on the treatment and the condition/illness. I don’t believe that those two types of medicine are mutually exclusive.
