did you know
the twins who played baby nash han in season 9 are actually girls!
Why was baby Nash's birthday party even be at the Wilson house?? Why is henren hosting? Why is Gabi there?
Nash is three and he knows he’s named after someone important. He’s a firefighter like daddy and that’s pretty cool.
Nash is five and his name isn’t actually Nash but that’s what everyone calls him. He gets confused when the kindergarten teacher calls him Robert on the first day.
Nash is seven and he knows that Bobby Nash was a great man. He was the fire captain before his dad and he’s super important to his entire family. Uncle Buck says he was the best man he knew. Taught him everything about cooking and being a good man. Nash loves Uncle Buck’s food so Bobby must have been the best.
Grandma calls him Robert. And sometimes Auntie Athena calls him Bobby. It’s confusing sometimes. His name is Nash.
Nash is eight and he asks Uncle Buck how Bobby died. His parents get quiet when he asks. His dad sometimes needs to leave the room. Uncle Buck hesitates before he speaks.
“Why don’t you ask your parents,” he asks.
“They don’t like talking about it,” he says simply.
“I—”
“I don’t get it. He’s important enough to name me after but nobody wants to talk about why he died.”
“He saved you dad,” Buck says.
Nash frowns. “Bobby— he— they got stuck somewhere and your Dad and Bobby they got— sick.”
Nash thinks that when he gets sick he always gets better.
“Why didn’t he have medicine?” Nash asks.
“Because there was only enough medicine for one person.”
Nash frowns. “Oh.”
“And we didn’t— we didn’t know that Bobby was sick too. He didn’t want us to have to choose. He saved your dad.”
“Wow,” Nash says, because what else is there to say. That’s a lot to live up to.
“Why does everyone call me Nash but grandma calls me Robert?”
“Uh—” Buck sighs. “Grandma calls you Robert because she thinks what is written on your birth certificate is the most important thing in the world. She calls me Evan even though I don’t like her to.”
“Why doesn’t everyone call me Robert?”
Maybe he’s not good enough to be Bobby Nash. He was a great man afterall. Nash is just Nash. He’s eight. He can ride his bike without training wheels and he can spell really well. But he didn’t save anybody.
“Because you’re… you. Your name might come from Bobby… but.. you’re your own person,” Uncle Buck says and Nash looks up at him frowning to himself.
Buck continues. “You, Mister Nash, are wonderfully you. And we don’t want you to be anybody else!” He says punctuating his words by lifting Nash into his arms and tickling his sides.
Nash squeals, squirming in his arms but not resisting. He loves his Uncle Buck.
Nash is eight and he might not be everything his namesake was, but he’s him. And maybe one day he’ll be amazing too. For now, he’ll help his uncle make cookies, because they’re the best. And they’re Bobby’s recipe too.
CIRCLE BABY
Something else I noticed in my rewatch of 9.01 is that baby Robert Nash Han is called Nash in the hulu subtitles as Buck is saying goodnight to him. The subtitles have gotten things wrong before, but I can be okay with calling him Nash. Just not Bobby or Baby Bobby.
please ignore the terrible quality but i had to go and check that i remembered right — official subtitles say “nash” confirmed for baby han
the subtitles saying "nash babbles" im so glad it wasnt "bobby"
