Natasha sees a lot of herself in Wanda. A lost girl, no family, no home. Natasha is the only one to ask Wanda what she wants for her brother's funeral. The only one to find out that before their parents died, Pietro and Wanda were growing up Jewish. Natasha helps Wanda look into current Jewish funeral traditions in order to decide the best ones for Pietro.
"We… we never got the chance to bury our parents," Wanda said, almost a whisper.
"I didn't get to bury mine either," Natasha replied, after a moment.
Finally, Wanda decided on what she wanted for her brother. Even though traditional said that those who died from a wound would not be washed, Wanda decided she wanted to wash Pietro anyway. A male member of the family was supposed to wash him, but since there was no one else, Wanda figured it would be okay if she did it. Natasha offered to help, but Wanda declined. She did however ask that Natasha stay with her, while she prepared her brother for burial.
They contacted a local rabbi about burial options and Wanda was given a few cemeteries to choose from. Natasha helped her and they found one that was small but not very far so Wanda could easily travel their alone if she wanted. Pietro was buried in a pine coffin, wearing a simple white shroud. Wanda tore a section of her shawl, the last one Pietro had stolen for her, to signify her loss. Natasha stood with Wanda while the rabbi spoke.
After Pietro was buried, Wanda returned to her room at the Avengers compound and sat shiva for seven days. Natasha made sure she ate at least twice a day and had plenty of water and checked on her each night before bed.
On the last night, Wanda asked her to stay. Natasha curled up next to her and held her as she cried herself to sleep.
Natasha was the one to tell Steve that Wanda was going to be an Avenger. Wanda wanted to make amends for what she had done, her time with Hydra, for helping create Ultron. Being an Avenger seemed the best opportunity. Steve, of course, didn't argue. He'd seen what Wanda had done in South Korea and Sokovia.
Natasha takes Wanda under her wing and begins training her, building muscle and learning to fight with her body before her powers. The two of them combined mean that Wanda is a force to be reckoned with.
As the new team comes together, Natasha and Steve at the helm, Wanda finds her place among them, finds a home, a family, a love. Natasha is a merciless teacher during the day, but a tender lover at night. They help each other with the scars of their pasts and the battle wounds to come.
For a while, there was a calm.
