A BTS Visual Guide to the Wicked Movie

Let me help save time for the musical theater aficionados.

First let's look at the movie trailer.

Director Jon Chu explains his vision for the film. And how the director of Crazy Rich Asians and In the Heights became Hollywood's go-to musical theater director.

Now let's examine the musical numbers, a fair portion of the singing was performed live. Due to the multiple edits, there's no way continuity-wise it could be completely live. Also, composer Stephen Schwartz shares how he revisited the music of the Broadway show to accommodate the film.

So let's go behind the filming of three scenes. The first is Popular!

There are THREE deep dives into the musical number Dancing Through Life from various creatives who explain how teamwork makes the dream work. Here they are discussing how they each contributed to creation of a pivotal moment.

Next, the emotional dance in the film.

Production designer Nathan Crowley walks us through how he designed the sets for ‘Wicked’ and how they planted nine million tulips to create Munchkinland. It is a great intro too filmmaking.
