“Tell me, Mingjue-xiong,” Xichen says, “had you not known Meng Yao is… not as he seems all these years, would you have treated him so skeptically?”

“What do you mean?” Mingjue asks gruffly.

“Your suspicion,” Xichen clarifies. “You’ve always held Meng Yao in such high suspicion, ever since she worked undercover for the Qishan Wen and abandoned you in the countryside after killing the Jin captain. Ever since he stopped working for you. Is it because you knew her identity, that she was a female impersonator all along?”

Hearing Xichen accuse him of the same words Jin Guangshan used against Jin Guangyao stung. “No. Of course not,” Mingjue retorts on reflex.

Even as he says it, though… guilt wriggles back to life in his chest, a slimy, writhing slug coated with self-doubt.

What if he has treated Meng Yao differently because of who he is?

It really was that easy, wasn’t it? Baxia had almost succeeded that day.

At once, there was guilt.

Clan Leader Nie, so caught up in his duties, had no time to wonder whether he was unnecessarily punishing himself by stepping between Jin Guangyao’s goals and his crimes. He had no time to ask whether he pushed himself toward an outcome that would not benefit him personally, in this or anything. His desires were scooped out of him from a young age, like the soft insides of a fruit by famished, avaricious hands, until all that was left was the hard, hollowed rind. To be shaped and remade into what the Unclean Realm needed, these wounds only festered with time. They would agonize Nie Mingjue until they killed him.

And still… he cared that Madam Jin hurt Jin Guangyao.

Jin Guangyao’s heart beat erratically in his chest.

Despite all he had endured that day, Jin Guangyao found Lady Hua’s voice lulling as she asked him a series of questions about his health history and symptoms the last few days. He accessed various points from his life with an even tone – which distracted him from the question at hand – questions about puberty, menstruation, his diet and other conditions. The aches he experienced. His scars. The operation on his chest. He worried she would find him grotesque, too abnormal to diagnose given his cultivation of yang and his social presentation as a man, his lacking and spotty menstruation, his symptoms of nausea – but she took in his responses without batting an eyelash, writing everything down carefully.

They are seated in a parlor next to a courtyard, the sun bearing down on the white marble the Jin loved. They had not walked far from the palace – just a few turns and a few streets at the bottom of the stairs, from what Jin Guangyao gathered. Behind Lady Hua is a medicine room stacked with drawers of herbs whose pungent aromas drift to him in the light breeze.

Jin Guangyao cries into his hands.

When Lady Hua was finished writing down what he said, she asked him to outstretch his hand, wrist up, so she could feel his pulse. She pressed two fingers lightly to various points in his arm for a few seconds before pulling back. Then she wrote down a few more notes and skimmed over everything she had written.

“Jin-er-gongzi,” she said ten minutes ago, her voice grave. “Your pulse and your sexual history indicate that you are pregnant.”

Before Jin Guangshan in the medical ward, Jin Hua projects innocuous, blank neutrality. Shaking her head, she apologizes at every question the Jin patriarch asks about Jin Guangyao’s whereabouts. Her whitened neck bends, red-painted lips fix into a tight line, and she bows, raising her hands over and over again.

“I am sorry, Clan Leader Jin,” she demures. “I do not know where he is.”

“No?” The Jin clan leader clucks, shifting backward on the medical bed. White bandages obscure half his forehead. “I would have thought Jin Guangyao confided in you.”

“No, Clan Leader Jin,” Jin Hua answers with self-fabricated remorse, lowering her gaze. “I only saw Jin-gongzi rush past me in the hallway after destroying all the things in his room—a horrible waste of cosmetics if you ask me. I followed him to ask what was going on, but before I could get an answer, he was out of my sight at the bottom of the palace stairs.” She tilts her head to one side, the golden beads and combs in her hair clinking, her gaze appealing. “I can only assume he tried to escape Jinlintai. It would have been the smartest choice after attacking Clan Leader Jin.”

Jin Guangshan shows no outward change to his face. But underneath his skin, he is blistering. He already knows she is lying. The guards posted on the palace’s entrance stairs had seen her and Jin Guangyao venturing down together, clutching each other, not arguing or avoiding, but focused and silent. She knows where Jin Guangyao is hiding. That was why she had been difficult to track down yesterday: She had been going back-and-forth between the palace and that place.

If that was the case, then she could be the one to lead him to it.

A/N: Happy Pride Month!! I've been remembering this NieLan fic I wrote for an exchange ages ago because I've been missing them. Despite NieLan being featured in almost every fic of mine that includes NMJ and LXC, I've only written about them exclusively this once. Maybe I'll have to change that!

Preview & Summary:

In no time at all, once seated, Nie Mingjue waved down a server. Rice wine was placed before them. He poured himself a cup. “Who’d’ve thought, we could spend years fighting Wen dogs, and yet a rampaging boar turns us into hightailing fools?” Wry amusement crept into his voice. There was even a minute quirk of his lips as he tipped his head back, alcohol following.

Xichen smiled at that. Now that they were alone, with no hopes of going back to Qinghe or Gusu for at least another day, surrounded by strangers who cared little for their reputation or propriety, they had no reason to cling to distant pleasantry around each other.

“I am glad we were able to mitigate the loss of more life,” Xichen said. He paused. “And that I was able to see to the end of it with you, Mingjue-xiong.”

Mingjue grinned at him. “Xichen, currently, we are nowhere near Gusu and its many rules. Would you care to share a drink with me?”

“Oh, no, I shouldn’t.” Xichen’s refusal was automatic.

“We just had a great victory,” Mingjue said. “The carcass of that accursed boar, once the rot melts from its flesh, can feed tens of locals for months should they dare to drag it from its resting place in the forest. Surely, you can spare a moment for celebration.”

It would be rude to refuse his oldest friend in this gesture of goodwill. Besides, Xichen felt he would be passing up a great chance. “Since Mingjue-xiong puts it so enticingly, I accept—but only one drink.”

“Of course,” Nie Mingjue said. He passed a cup to Xichen and filled it to the brim. “Ganbei!”

“Ganbei,” Xichen called. He downed the entire cup.

A bowl of dark noodle broth, steamed bok choy, and four drinks later, Xichen was laughing loudly at the man next to him, hand to his face, fifth drink in hand.

It’s been a long time since Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue were able to catch up. They make the most of their time while they can.

He could live a normal life as Clan Leader Nie’s wife, caring for his child. He could be the benevolent lady of virtue society told him every woman should strive to be. Chaste, strict with herself and others, never too involved with politics unless it was behind the scenes, supporting her husband whenever he needed it. She could be demure in the presence of men, offer her insight only when spoken to, and pleasure her husband behind closed doors when his fits of fury and warmaking drew him back home to the Unclean Realm for a moment of respite. She could be content watching over the household from a distant vantage point, very much within the control of her red-polished fingers, like Vice General Meng Yao had years ago, but as Nie-furen instead.

The corners of Jin Guangyao’s lips curl in irony.

It could never be so.

Having a child put inside him by Clan Leader Nie had not cured the imbalance of his qi, had not suddenly made him realize his true purpose as a filial daughter to Jin Guangshan, had not realigned his reincarnation or whatever reasoning you wanted to put behind it.

It had only strengthened his resolve that he could never, ever be that way. Because he isn’t.

He is not a woman. If he was, then his entire life should have made him one already.

Jinlintai’s brown rooftops and smooth, pale walls shine majestic and still in the dapple pastels of morning. Contrary to the Lanling capital’s usual hustle, fraught with political deals and rumoring intrigue, Lan Xichen climbs the steps to the welcome pavilion, accompanied by his clansmen, and struck by the silence of the guards posted on every odd step. It is as though the Jin are more afraid of those who might enter with opinions less than exultant of their hosts, than invaders with brutality in their hearts.

At the top of the stairs, in the welcome courtyard, unbidden, the image of Wangji, crouched and bleeding in the cold rain, overlays with the false serenity of morning. To Lan Xichen’s horror, his brother sits there, motionless in the oncoming sun, hair cut, body and white robes drenched in glacial water, stripped to his back as a dark pool of blood seeps from the lash wounds in his flesh. His stare is empty, cold, like it always is for anything he holds a deep distaste. Full of scorn for his older brother, Lan Wangji judges him, though Xichen stands tall above him.

Guilt once again pits his gut.

Meng Yao – Jin Guangyao had no such fantasies about him, did he?

In spite of himself, Nie Mingjue’s heart aches. Fear overcomes the hotness in his shoulders and the tension in his neck.

Jin Guangyao only enticed him, had sex with him, because he was fearful of what Jin Guangshan would do if he did not succeed. He even said it himself: “My father is watching,” with a frantic edge to his voice and wildness to his eyes that made Nie Mingjue’s throat clench. Jin Guangyao had only been cornered, and his possible pregnancy in the moments after were the manifestation of that cornering. He was not delirious with the throes of post-coital contentment.

Nie Mingjue clenches his fists. His face raises toward the ceiling, despondent in his self-blame.

It is all his own fault.

Desiring someone for their body, not for their mind… A subordinate no less. A junior no less. A man who was not a man in the way of others.

He loved Jin Guangyao for his mind, too, so why?

Or was it just Meng Yao?

Mingjue still could not get over the person he thought Meng Yao to be in Qinghe, before his manipulation and aggression were ever directed toward Clan Leader Nie. That’s why he couldn’t resist Jin Guangyao, still, after all this time. Not only because of the other’s embodied allure as a man, a man in a female body, but because Nie Mingjue kept conflating Jin Guangyao with the sweet, soft-spoken and charming advisor of his memories.
