Finally got around to buying a ticket to FantasyCon!
They closed school for the day because we're supposed to get absolutely buried in snow!! Eeee! So excited! So today is for hot cocoa, David Attenborough on marathon in the background, and some quality time with my silicone molds! Time to get this doll totally molded! >:D God, I'm such a loser.
I cannot actually deal with the fact that I have to wait until May to see the new Star Trek movie.
AAAAH IT'S THEBOOKH8R'S BIRTHDAY

top 5 characters you loathe even though we are apparently supposed to like them
it goes without saying that ted mosby reigns supreme, but here are five others who need to get fuuuuuucked:
EVERYONE in Paradise Lost (except Lucifer and Eve).
EVERYONE on Modern Family (except Cam and Lily).
April on Parks and Rec. It's a testament to how well she's written, how immature and fucking selfish she is in everything she does, that every time she's sulking on screen I want to throw something THROUGH my tv. Let's not even talk about last week when she jeopardized something Ben had worked so hard for just because she's 23 and has never considered another human being's needs before—or even worse, she HAS because she's really, really smart, and she said FUCK IT anyway and made sure no one respected Ben. MARGARET, DON'T EVEN ASK ME ABOUT EATING THE GODDAMN TURKEY CHILI OFF THE FUCKING FRISBEES BECAUSE I STILL RAGE BLACKOUT AT THE THOUGHT OF IT.
Frodo Baggins. Who doesn't hate that little shit, though.
Remus Lupin, fuck you and that time you abandoned your wife and your unborn child. UGH. You were a spineless fuck before, but that was it, motherfucker. I hope Ted Tonks is beating the shit out of you in the afterlife.
ANSWER YOUR OWN QUESTION: top 5 ladycrushes, pre-1900 edition
SO, these are fictional lady crushes because historical ones need way more research. Right now it's "APHRA BEHN! SAPPHO! LADY WHO INVENTED THE COMPUTER??" Accepting nominations, yes, of course, please.
1. Guinevere
I think Guinevere has been given a raw deal in the past thousand years or so, especially after The Mists of Avalon (ESPECIALLY after the movie where my nemesis, Samantha Mathis, played her, jesus christ why don't you go ahead and ruin EVERYTHING) when she was written as the embodiment of everything anti-Avalon and cockblocking the Arthur/Lancelot and blah blah blah. Tennyson, believe it or not, writes a fantastic Guinevere in his Idylls of the King. I think I could persuade her to the Sapphic side after a year of being her lady-in-waiting or whatever because if Arthur has his friends, why can't she have hers? (God, guys. Guinevere barely has any lady friends. I want to be her lady friend who won't judge her when she can't have children and when we're making out.)
2. Penelope (Homer's Odyssey)
I love Penelope. I love Penelope. I love her so much. I think she's the best female character in both of the Homeric epics. I want to be her daimonih, her inscrutable, strange one. I want her to greet me after twenty years' absence with a raised eyebrow and a sly little, "You are so strange," before she baits me into revealing something that only someone in our family would know to prove that it's really me. Ugh, Penelope, circumspect Penelope, do me in that olive tree bed.
3. Mary (New Testament)
As in "mother of Christ" Mary, a lady who I'm like, GIRL, WHAT IS YOUR STORY? This 14/15-year-old girl is engaged to a grown ass man and then one day she's pregnant because a guy who says he's an angel comes into her room and says she will be? Growing up in a very strict household, I was fascinated by this girl who could get boys into her room without getting into trouble.
4. Eve (Old Testament)
So you wake up in this garden with a hot guy who's your entire world and your chores include eating and being happy. One day (maybe it's the same day you woke up, who knows, time is weird when you're blissful and innocent), this talking snake says hi and is like, "Have you thought about eating the fruit of that tree over there?"
"Well," you say, "God said we shouldn't."
Which isn't to say you didn't think about it, just that you know you shouldn't.
"Well, I ate from it, and I'm a fucking TALKING SNAKE," the snake says.
If a fucking talking snake came up to me and was like, do you want to become a talking snake OR SOMETHING EVEN COOLER?? ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS EAT THIS APPLE/FIG/APRICOT/NECTARINE/WHATEVER?? I would eat like five of them. Worst case scenario: you "die", and God didn't really explain the mechanics of that like, at all, he just said "you will die"—in a paradisiacal garden, what the hell does that even mean? Eve got a fucking raw deal and I want to fly her away where we can eat all the nectarines we want.
5. Athena (YEAH!)
My love of the (Greek/Roman/ALL) classics first started when I sat down and read Bulfinch's Mythology in a library and then got my parents to buy me a copy so I could wear the spine out at home. Years and lit classes and degrees later, my favorite of all the gods and goddesses is still Athena. She's an amazing female character. Have to emphasize: female. What startles me as I think about it now is that Athena's femininity is so rarely, if ever, questioned.* She's the warrior goddess, the goddess of victory, the master strategist and tactician, and she's a woman. She's Athena and clearly female, bright-eyed Athena in her aegis. No one questions it, doubts it, comments on it; she's Athena, the warrior woman, and that was so fucking inspiring to me as a kid. Athena was tough and intelligent, and her gender was not an issue. No one pointed out that she couldn't do anything because she was a goddess and she should leave shit for Ares or Apollo—no, fuck that, she's Athena and she's going to be a warrior and sometimes she'll weave and she'll be the best at that, too, and one won't invalidate the other. Fucking hell, we need more Athenas.
* There may have been a couple of times in the Iliad when Athena's femininity was insulted during those scenes when the gods choose sides in Achaians vs. Trojans and they TRASH TALK EACH OTHER because the Greek myths are honestly the best stories ever told; however, that was a very deliberate move to show that this stupid little human war had torn the gods apart and they were turning on each other, so it had to be stopped before shit got out of control. Again, it might have happened, I'm too lazy to pick up my copy of the Iliad, look for that passage, and probably get sucked into it for the rest of the night.
