In regards to Edward Newgate being known as "Whitebeard" despite not having a beard...
There's actually a really simple explanation!
You see, while the English translation of his epithet is Whitebeard...
In the original Japanese he is known as Shirohige (白ひげ) of the Shirohige Kaizokudan.
As an anime fan, chances are you already know that shiro (白) means white, but as for hige...
The Japanese word hige (ひげ) is a lot more complex than the English word for beard:
Hige can mean beard, yes — but it can also mean mustache, sideburns, or even whiskers!
So, "Shirohige"? Could be translated as Whitebeard, yes...
Or, it could also potentially be translated as White-mustache or White-sideburns or even White-whiskers!
In other words:
The name is entirely accurate! :)
