KUMI MORROW X READER X KIRSH
'We'll meet again...Don't know where....Don't know when....'
You hating flying. Travel by air was for the elite or military, not for scientists of your caliber. Working at a Yutani facility, you hardly went further than 5 miles from the work bunkers and whatever lab or research facility you were assigned to. Besides that, public transportation had developed widely within the territories, there was simply no reason for anybody besides the rich to travel in the air. It was also greatly expensive and risky, with the consideration of the ever changing weather in the sky. No common person liked to fly nowadays, and you were no different.
However, your time in the Maginot was different, being put into cryopods on earth and woken up when you were deep in space, it took away that debilitating anticipation of going into the air and breaking earth’s atmosphere. It was easier. Waking up and adjusting to space was a challenge, but your mind was preoccupied with many things besides being in the air. One of them was being cooped up with Chibuzo, experimenting on the creatures for almost the entirety of the trip. How funny that you had different things to worry about then. Containment of dangerous creatures, keeping yourself busy along the voyage, and steering clear of the weirdos you were deployed with.
Most of the crew was agreeable, but there were a few that raised the hairs on your neck if left alone with them. Teng was the obvious one, everybody avoided him after the report you made to security. Only two years in when you had caught him in the cryopod room, just staring over someone as they slept. You weren’t sure how he had access without security clearance to enter there but Morrow handled it to where Teng was under tight surveillance when active on the ship. And the creepy behavior had toned down.
One of the escapes you had was the budding friendships you developed with some of the crew, but most of all with Morrow. After the incident with Teng, you found yourself comfortable around the cyborg rather than viewing him as a strict manager of the ship. You got along with Zaveri and Bronski, so it felt like a bonus to be on Morrow’s good side as well.
Although Morrow could never admit it, your presence on the ship is what saved and inspired him to keep going. After the alert notice of his daughter passing, he was doing everything to drown his sorrows without compromising the mission. But with how often you visited him to check up, the voyage back home was made less depressing. You confided in him that you didn’t have anyone waiting for you on earth anymore, that your family died of old age comfortably - hence why you took up this crazy contract. Yutani drew up a nice deal for your family to receive a corporate allowance that was earned as the voyage progressed on the Maginot. It was an offer you couldn’t resist, and Morrow praised you for it. It’s a lot of sacrifice to work away from family and provide after your absence, he would know after all.
But as the months and years passed, you both had talked about potentially settling down once the Maginot lands. Dreams of buying a house along the beach or in one of the remaining forests of WY territory. You couldn’t confidentially say that you were in a relationship with the cyborg, but the friendship at some point turned more than platonic - a companionship. You both knew that starting something on board would cause chaos, that if the one person who is supposed to operate by the book is caught breaking rules, then nothing would get done. So an agreement was made between you both, that things would be different back home. The contracts would be done, and you would have time to focus on each other. But how would you have known things would go south at such a promise? Despite everything you both discussed in the 65 years passed, that Morrow would have abandoned you in the wreckage to save himself.
Your knuckles start to sting with your tight grip on the seat harness. Deep breaths inhaled through your nose and exhaled through your mouth. That’s the trick you learned when facing any little anxieties of yours, but it helped very little when there’s a man child parading through the ship. Barefoot. Spouting nonsense about your old boss, Yutani the Youngest.
You couldn’t imagine being contracted by this boy, the lack of impulse control from him made you wildly uncomfortable. Not that there’s much to be desired working for any of the 5 super corporations, but Yutani at least had order.
The reason you are in a flying ship once more is because Kavalier agreed to arbitration and meet with Yutani. They were going to discuss the property possessions of the Maginot crash and if he’ll hand anything over to her. It didnt make a lot of sense why you had to come along, but maybe they’re gonna trade you back? Or even just toss you back to Yutani in place of the specimens, you were unsure.
Before the trip, Atom had pulled you aside to go over a few details of your attendance during the meeting. He made it very clear that you were not to speak out of line or else there would be consequences. One would think there would be little to threaten with someone who had no family, no partner or children. But Atom made you realize there is always a fate more worse than death. A few suggestions like sending you to work in an unchecked Prodigy mine or to send you into space, alone. Thanks to Morrow’s incorrect report of the Maginot crew, the possibilities of handling someone who was mislabeled as deceased were endless, and it was enough to shut you up and agree to stay in line during the meeting.
Opening your eyes, you peer at Kavalier messing around in the cockpit, joking around with the pilot’s seat. Was he trying to make the ship crash? Another exhale escapes you.
You then turn to Kirsh, seated on the opposite side of the ship, focus pinned on that tablet he’s held onto for the entirety of this trip. You don’t blame him, if anything you would be doing the same. The lab full of creatures was not being supervised by anyone, so he must do it from afar. Which was another reason you had wanted to stay, to take care of the creatures and follow the new protocols correctly. But Atom suggested it’s too much of a risk leaving you alone at the facility with a bunch of impressionable hybrids.
As your gaze moves away from Kirsh, you see he is seated next to a window. The view of the cityscapes and clouds were amazing. It was a beautiful sight, but the speed passing over it made you want to gag. Your stomach does another twist and your eyes shut tightly.
“How much longer till we’re there?” You call out desperately, for anyone to answer and give clarity.
“20 minutes.” Kirsh replies. You open your eyes at the response to see his attention fixed on you now. Both of you had this growing tendency to just have a stare off until the other one looks away.
You had become somewhat close to this synthetic while staying at Prodigy. When they ‘rescued’ you, he was the one that brought you to Kavalier. When Boy found out that you were one of two lead scientists for the collection of these specimens, he immediately authorized the medical team to heal you and smacked your bottom back to work when recovered. Once mobile again, you were assigned to be Kirsh’s human assistant to help contain the creatures with the knowledge you had. You didn’t mind working with the specimens again, but there was something off about the synthetic you were charged to.
Kirsh was odd for many reasons. There’s a duality that exists in him, where he is either a sassy warden when it’s just the two of you, another that’s like a gentle paternal figure around the synthetic hybrids, and then there’s a butler side as well.. You’ve never met such a multifaceted synthetic before, he could almost be mistaken for a human at how he carried himself and spoke to others. But you don’t think he would take too kindly to that compliment, or even consider it as one.
But the more time you spent with Kirsh you could feel your walls come down. Being taken in by a new corporation and being forced into medical would make anyone freeze like you did. There was nobody you knew or anything familiar in this new world you crashed into. But with Kirsh, you felt you could trust him, as he became the reoccurring face you saw at the Neverland facility. It felt so easy to, with how he mended your broken rib after the crash site, always being near your hospital bed when you had night terrors, just overall making sure you’re alright and falling in line to help Prodigy. Part of it was that you couldn’t help but owe your compliance to help with Yutani’s creatures, it was your main area of study after all. It was hard to have your reservations of being kept held hostage with another company against your will, when there’s been no warrant not to trust Prodigy. After all, they saved you right?
But little did you know, it was all calculated for you to feel this way.
When he first saved you, he planned to use you for the sake of your credentials to access Mother, making his job easier of containing the creatures his boss was excited to take over, but it was unexpected how Kirsh became a bit possessive over you. Once he was given that authority, he gripped onto that ownership like a leash. He didn’t let you wander the facility without his presence, or socialize with the other scientists without him at your side. According to him, it was just following orders making sure you’re not plotting anything. There was a strange feeling that overtook him at times that he slowly leaned into. A pull - so to speak, of wanting to willingly care for you.
It dumbfounded him. Pissed him off to no end because he was supposed to be better than a man. But how can he resist when you treat him with such respect and follow orders better than half the people he works with?
Kirsh already has most things go his way, with the exception of his creator. That, he can do nothing within his programming about. So when you eventually open up about Morrow and the history that lingers in your heart, Kirsh makes a point of twisting your rescue story, shining him as your ultimate savior.
You feel the decent of the ship finally, but you whimper at how your stomach fails to keep up.
Kirsh puts the tablet down once they start to land the ship, focused on you again. Your head is lowered with your eyes closed. Noting the breathing technique and the grip on your harness, you obviously hated flying, but the ship was landing onto the roof and you will be relieved.
The building is tall and very similar to an average corporate structure. Everything inside was reflective from the chrome plating of the walls and floors.
Yutani was prompt and the first to arrive. Her hair was done up in an intricate style and her clothes matched but rivaled Kavalier’s in a way. Both screaming ‘comfortable’ ‘luxurious’ and ‘rich’. The meeting room was barren, practically empty with the exception of this long table. The officiator of this meeting bows his head, as he did with Yutani, to Kavalier’s entrance. Your head was kept down as you trailed behind him and Atom, with Kirsh behind. When you look up, you spot her looking at you along with her own butler. It makes you pause before seeing the other figure standing beside her.
It was unexpected to see your old security officer here too. Morrow seemed to be just as shocked at the sight of you as well, fully recovered and walking. It’s almost like he holds back from saying something to you - but Kirsh puts a hand on your back to keep you moving with Kavalier. You take the hint and continue towards the opposite side of the table.
You’ve only seen the heiress a few times in person and on a screen, but never this intense and up close. You hardly doubt you meant anything to her up until now. Prodigy has the 2 things that made the Maginot ship valuable, the creatures and their handling experts. Due to the crash, that unfortunately left you as the only person who knows how to ‘tame’ these monsters.
The neutral meeting officiator begins the discussion. It was messy with Kavalier’s constant interruptions to Yutani’s plea for obtaining what’s hers. Almost visibly cringing at how he climbed onto the table. But all is halted when she brings the spotlight onto you.
“You have one of my science officers, I would like to at least request the return of them so they may fulfill their contract.”
These damn rulers are so obsessed with their possession over people. It didn’t matter where you were, you would be exploited for your labor regardless. But Kavalier surprises you with a save.
“Ah - yes, the survivor I think you mean. But didn’t your security file them as deceased? I mean don’t get me wrong - but wouldn’t that mean they are released from the contract? From my experience that is a lot of undoing paperwork to make someone suddenly alive in the system.” He grins from ear to ear at her silence. She then looks to you and scoffs with a grin.
“10 billion for their return and the creatures.”
He inches closer on the table.
You see a small twitch of her face.
There’s an upturn of Kavalier’s toothy grin, as if he was playing a game.
Yutani sighs, but looks agreeable.
Kavalier then pulls a fast one on Yutani as their deal is struck, letting her know that she will repossess you and the cargo once the quarantine period is over. For the first time ever you see a trillionaire’s face fall in defeat. But she comes back with a final offer.
“40 billion, for the immediate return of officer Y/N.”
The offer runs a shiver down your spine and a small gasp escapes through you. You truly were worth nothing if not for your knowledge of the creatures. That number alone could pay off the contracts in a city. And here she was offering it to buy you out of their grasp.
Atom had guided you towards the door once Boy decided to test Yutani's offer, your presence was no longer required as a deal was already somewhat struck. Now to go over details.
A few empty and uncomfortable benches awaited you outside as the meeting continued. You decide to sit on a bench overlooking the city. Without the movement of aircraft you were strapped to, the view was breathtaking, and you were finally able to enjoy it.
Back inside the conference room, Morrow was fighting for a chance to see you, to explain himself, and possibly take you back willingly. He turned to Yutani, excusing himself first before they head back to HQ. He wasn’t sure if you had already went back up to the Prodigy ship, but he was willing to try. It would make a lot of difference to talk to you in person. The last he saw you was at the Maginot crash site in the synthetic's hold. He had stunned you for a foolish reason, but he had to do what he thought was right to secure the cargo, to secure you without any mishaps. He won’t be able to forgive himself for abandoning you, but you had better chance of survival if Prodigy took you in and healed you as they did.
Morrow will have to talk with Yutani, to convince her that it’s better you’re with the creatures through this phony “quarantine” Kavalier is playing out, but he needs to speak with you first. You would be able to insure the specimens proper return and make sure the deal follows through.
With Yutani’s permission, he exits from the office, immediately spotting you far down the hall on a bench, lost in admiration of the view from this floor.
The sounds of footsteps breaks you out of your daze, your heart jumps at the sight of Morrow coming towards you.
He struggles to find the right words for a moment. It’s noticed on his face as his mouth opens and closes twice. But he is already a man of few words.
"I'm glad to see you're in better condition, Y/N."
You hold an intense stare at him and scoff at his words, he stunned you into unconsciousness and he expects a friendly conversation?
"Oh, now you're relieved to see me? Surprised you didn't stun me again this time. I mean - what the hell Morrow?!"
It all was so simple to him, why he did what he did at the crash site, but he found it hard to explain it to you without pushing you further away. How could one understand why an old friend would stun them into unconsciousness while they were obviously injured? He tries to move closer to you once he sees the tears well up in your eyes.
"Y/N - I'm sorry. I can't ask you to forgive me, but please know, it wasn’t part of the plan to leave you there. You were supposed to come with me. But the circumstances didn't allow for that. This time though, you can come back - come with me. Yutani just wants what you know and then you're done. We will be done, together…" And that's what set you off enough to shove him. The tears were falling now.
"How dare you say that to me! As if I had a choice in all of this! I can't simply walk back to Yutani without starting some worthless corporate territory war!" You cry out, but you wipe your tears not wanting to waste it on Morrow. You have already given him enough during your first week at the Neverland facility. All those nights wondering why he had shot you, or left you at the crash site to die.
His heart stings at your words because you were right. He had no right to ask you to come back to him, to simply resume your affections before everything had gone to shit. He tried to prevent everything, he really did. But having the worst parts of a man, he is also burdened with having the worst of a cyborg, following orders despite how he feels.
He moves close, almost to embrace you, wanting to just take you away. You weren't supposed to become a new toy for Prodigy, your place was supposed to be with him. That was the promise you both made, that nothing could be done on the Maginot, but your feelings were received by Morrow, just before everything went to hell and he had no time to consider you.
Your clenched fists begin to shake, everything was so unfair. Why did you think anything would be different once you got back home? Closing your eyes to hold back the tears, you almost accept Morrow to hold you, but a firm hand yanks you back by your arm, making you stumble back.
A pathetic yelp escapes you, bumping into the chest of your captor. Looking up to see Kirsh giving that same unimpressed expression at Morrow.
“I think that’s enough for now.”
You try to pull your arm away but the hold he has on you barely budges. At your attempt, he breaks his gaze from Morrow and looks down to you.
“Head back to the rooftop and wait for me there. Kavalier already on his way up. Let’s not make them wait.”
Now it’s confirmed that whatever deal was made, you were still to be kept by the Prodigy Corporation. Your mouth opens to protest but Kirsh gives you a pointed look before you could speak.
“Go.” He lets go of your arm and gives you a little nudge forward around Morrow. Figuring there’s not much you could actually protest since the corporate lords have decided your fate, you walk past Morrow and your eyes lock one more time.
“Stay strong, Y/N.” He quietly murmurs as your shoulder brushes him.
They both watch you walk down the hall to the elevators. Morrow was going to leave and head back to Yutani as well - but Kirsh breaks the silence once you’re around the corner.
“I can see why Miss Yutani would want such an officer back.”
At the mention of you, Morrow turns around to face the synthetic. His fists are clenched but he won’t throw anything, all bets would be off if a fight broke out after an arbitration meeting. The deal for you and the specimens would be off the table, and he would never see you.
“-She’s well trained to do as she’s told. In fact, I’d say more well trained than my own kids. Guess I have you to thank for that.”
Morrow’s face hardens at the glint in Kirsh’s eye when speaking about you, the way his lip purses as if in thought of something. But his face further betrays him as it scrunches thinking how Kirsh compares you to that of an obedient pet. His cyborg arm produces the knife, sliding out between his middle and index fingers. Kirsh is unaffected by the weapon, knowing it’s just for show, but he can’t contain the raise of his eyebrows in mock offense. “
“You should be happy Mr. Morrow, your long term contract with these creatures will finally come to an end, once we return them by the end of the quarantine period, of course.” He brushes past Morrow, following the same route as you towards the elevators.
Morrow's gaze follows Kirsh, his cyborg knife slowly retracting into place again.
“The deal is for both the specimens and for the return of Science officer Y/N.” Morrow tries to sound calm, but the statement is almost through gritted teeth.
Kirsh slows his walk enough to glance back over his shoulder to Morrow. The cyborg’s blood boils as he see’s a slight upturn of an amused smirk on Kirsh’s face.
“Of course.” And with that he leaves Morrow alone in the hall, a smile on his face as he heads back to you.
Morrow’s form shakes, enraged that he can’t tear this synthetic to shreds.
“I’ll see you soon, old toy.” He growls out, before heading back to escort Yutani to headquarters. Morrow will complete the mission, and you’ll return back to him at his side - that much he is confident in.
Kirsh’s expression returns to normal when he enters into the elevator with you, barely being caught between the doors. It startled you, looking up to Kirsh and quickly looking down to your shoes again before he can make a comment. You sniffle as casually as you could, wiping your face. He looks over at the sound, tilting his head as he gets a good look at your face. From the gloss of your cheeks and how your eyelashes stuck together, you were obviously crying, maybe even sobbing. Not wanting to further distress you before getting onboard the ship, he decides to save his questions for later - but you wanted to fill the silence.
“What did you two talk about?”
He almost ignored your question, but he decides to bait you a little.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but I was catching Mr.Morrow up on the details of the agreement with Yutani.”
“I’m still your warden for the next 4-6 weeks. For quarantine, of course.”
It felt like a punch to the stomach. Although in the back of your mind, you already knew that you weren’t going “home” anytime soon, it felt so dehumanizing to be bargained for and have no choice in the matter of your fate. There’s not much you can respond with rather than lowering your head.
“My turn, what did you speak with Mr.Morrow about?” and his head is turned facing you as you’re focused on the reflections in the elevators chrome plating. The questions almost makes you tear up,but you try to hold it in.
"Hm. I assume this is from before. Sorry that he shot you? left you? Or reported you dead without confirming for himself?" Kirsh inquires, further rubbing salt on the wound.
He almost regrets his answer when he hears a sniffle and your head bows, hands coming up to wipe your falling tears.
"E-Everything... He apologized for everything.." You exhale shakily, suppressing a sob.
Kirsh notices how your hands resume being held at your front after wiping your face, clenched together due to your emotional state yet he can't help but observe you're mimicking him. It's a signature stance he does, and he's noticed you're incorporating him already into your body language. How interesting.
There's a momentary silence in the elevator finally, signaling the conversation is over - thank goodness. As much as Kirsh sometimes tried to make you feel better, he ultimately makes it worse. At the thought of Morrow and the departing conversation, you let a few more tears out before heading to the ship. Shoulders and lip quivering as you refuse to let out a sound.
But there’s the noise of rustling fabric beside you. Kirsh stretched out his hand just below your bowed head, catching one of many fallen tears onto his fingertip. Your head immediately whips up at his action, watching as he brings it to his face.
He briefly examines it - feeling how warm it is coming from the source. Those dark eyes go back to you.
Before you could ask what he's doing, he brings the finger to his mouth, not breaking the eye contact as he ingests your sorrows. A weird feeling of heat rushes through your stomach as Kirsh palates the taste of your stolen tear, making you cower back a smidge into the elevator, horrified as you regard him palating the taste. A mild disapproving hum can be heard from him.
"Hm, too salty. You need to drink more water."
And then, the elevator dings to the rooftop, where Boy Kavalier and Atom Eins await you both. You’re a bit speechless and frozen in place at Kirsh’s actions, waiting for him to leave first. But he leans back to let you go ahead.
