I really love that people are offering to teach me cards. Once upon a time I knew how to play Hearts, and I learned... something... years ago, that clearly I cannot remember, but that’s about it. ;)

Nothing about this is easy, so I can’t dredge up any sort of Pollyanna response about how you’re supposed to be feeling all positive. I’m really sorry about how terrible you’re feeling. (I’m only a few years behind you, I think.)

That’s okay - it’s something that’s been on my mind pretty much since my dad died, almost two years ago. That kind of drove home my mortality in a way I hadn’t really thought about it before (which was lucky for me, tbh), but now with the combined inability to do anything with what I feel like I still have to offer, as well as knowledge that I’ve got more years behind me than ahead, and on top of that assholes who would rather treat others like crap rather than pull their heads from their asses... it’s just kind of hard to claw my way back to the surface sometimes.

Well, as a 45 year old person who loves the contribution you and all the other so-called “has-beens” make, I wish I could help with the positivity. I think it’s just a matter of ignoring nonsense, really.

I think you’re probably right... and all the more reason, IMO, to move from “fandom” to something less totalizing. We may share a common textual interest, but that’s about as far as that connection goes.

There are whole swathes of the fandom I steer clear of because of attitudes like that – my life is happier for it. Sometimes fandom ‘trends’ must pass me by entirely because of the fragmentation, but … meh

Yep, me too. And I guess, as you say, we’re better for it. I do know I’d rather not play with people who cannot help but be dicks, so I don’t know why I’m giving them any real estate in my head.

Thanks for all of these suggestions - I hadn’t even considered “narrative” as a noun, because I have an unhealthy reliance on modifiers! They’re all circling around the work I’m thinking of, so they’re helping me get closer to what it is I think I’m trying to say. :)

Do you think stories that have large supporting casts are there because the author feels they have to invest more in world building? I've always wondered if this was sometimes a case of fannish v non fannish writers; can writers influenced by fandom get used to working in (or with) pre existing universes and fandom cultures, giving them the sense of security they need to write a more focused story -- whereas writers with less fannish experience sometimes feel pressure to fill more of a void? :-)

I don’t know honestly. I’m probably not a valid test case since I started writing long long long before I was even aware of fandom. 

I don’t think it’s a case of focus or lack of focus, though. There is a sense of groundedness, for lack of a word that actually exists, in a story with a large supporting cast of friends and family and acquaintances. It works brilliantly in some stories, like the one I’m reading right now. There’s a richness in having a vivid world and setting at your fingertips. 

I tend to write about people that are fairly rootless for one reason or another (which isn’t surprising—I feel pretty rootless myself sometimes), and that doesn’t lend itself to sprawling hometowns and family histories. For the stories I’m writing right now, that rootlessness works, for the most part. But I do wonder what layers I could add if I had bigger casts and more connections for my main characters.

I think that’s where writing for/in fandom doesn’t necessarily have a skill overlap with writing fiction for the market. (And they are different skills, for sure!) For most fanfic, your supporting cast is already in place for you (not all fanfic,obviously), so there’s no need to provide one. If anything, I suspect my time writing in fandom might’ve caused my “create world and supporting casts” writing muscle to atrophy a little. ;)

I find the degree of bonding between MAFM & your brother which this implies kind of charming. Aided, no doubt, by the fact that said printer isn’t in MY home . . .

It's an evolving relationship, but they both have a certain love of the ridiculous. My brother also brought him a Polish sea captain hat.

I understand that your other helf has a printer addiction. What is it about printers, exactly, that … excites … him? Why are four printers better than three? Do they have different purposes/qualities? Is there any logic involved? I feel for you!

It's cheap/free printers... apparently each one has a special super power that none of the others has or something IDEK.

Think of the repercussions for in-universe politics of sex and gender! The economic implications of babies without 9ish months build up. The [different] in-universe reasons for unwanted "pregnancies" -- the impact of this on... cases... everything!

Yes! You wouldn't have to worry about sex and gender! It's almost like the anti-Omegaverse that way, in that the Omegaverse is kind of like, "What if guys got treated like girls just because they have the babies." Whereas in this scheme, no one's having the babies, so theoretically everyone should be equally the same. So child-rearing really should be equally split between the parents and their individual preferences. 

And your baby showers would happen after the fact, after you've met the baby and have ideas about what you want for the baby, and they would be these huge parties. 

And I love the idea that maybe you don't really have "unwanted" pregnancies, or that that concept of it, as we would have it, is foreign in that world. So that if you end up with an unexpected baby, you don't even know how to feel, because that just doesn't happen, ever, there's just no concept of it.

Keep a note of everything she says/does that is odd. Call 911 with anything that looks like deterioration/all symptoms, contact any doctor(s) that you can and try your best to get your Mum to the ER through persuasion… sorry this is happening!

I'm keeping a notepad of everything 'off' she says and the time. She's coming in and out of lucidity but doesn't remember ever saying anything off at all. She flat out refused to go to the emergency room and went to bed. I don't know if I should wake her every few hours or let her sleep? I called her doctor on his emergency line. Hopefully he'll get back to me.
