You were awake a split second before he was, and you knew what woke you. Nightmares. His nightmares.
Even as it echoes off the walls of your shared bedroom, you heard Jake’s bellow quiet quickly as he froze next to you. You knew better than to touch him until you had confirmation he was indeed awake after one of he nightmares. You had learned that lesson early on one night when he came up swinging, connecting his meaty fist to your cheek after you laid a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Oh god no,” he whispered softly, his voice broken.
“Baby?” you asked, tenderly, gently, hoping to not scare him any more than he likely already was.
His response came in the form of soft sobs as he rolled on his side, pressing his face into your neck. “Oh god,” he muttered, babbling, almost incoherent.
“Oh handsome man,” you cooed into his sweaty hair, pressing your cheek to the top of his head, wrapping your arms around him. You felt him cry more than heard him, his whole body wracked with each sob. You knew this was all you could do for him; comfort him, wrap him in your love until he calmed himself. “It’s ok, my love,” you whispered softly into his hair. “It’s ok. It was just a dream.”
You never asked him about his nightmares, the terrors that stalked him when he closed his eyes. You expected it had something to do with his time in the military, things you couldn’t ask him about, things he couldn’t tell you about. He never really talked about what he saw on his missions to all parts of the world, but you knew some of it came out in the form of nightmares and night terrors. And honestly, if this was how it affected the strong man in your arms, you were comfortable not knowing what spurred these nocturnal visions that passed behind his eyelids as he slept beside you.
Your arms tightened around him as you felt him relax, his soft sobs turning into sighs and hiccups as you felt him drift back to sleep against you. Stroking your fingers through the hair on the back of his head, you pressed your cheek tighter against him, softly kissing his hair before closing your eyes, tightening your hold on him just a little more as you followed him back into sleep’s domain, hoping, praying your arms and love were enough to keep the horrors away for a little bit tonight.
