I’m doing some more research into Cuba. Right now I’m looking at the religions and indigenous population/religion/history.

I really have to say, like.

I just.

For one race/sexuality/ability/etc. are not accessories. It’s not like something you can place on a character after the fact. It informs every aspect of them, even if it ends being that they aren’t a stereotype, or what you’d typically expect, because we can choose how we express or don’t our identities, it still needs to be a concious decision. One made only AFTER there’s a solid base of understanding on how that identity/experience might shape a character.

But also, like,

You get soooo much story and plot ideas and inspiration when you’re sort of piecing it all together. Your characters will be so much more vibrant and believeable, because their traits and actions and values will come from real sources. It removes the guess-work from the process. Instead of the anxiety of a blank slate, tese characters have history and culture. Of which you can affirm or deny or subvert, but it’s still a base.

So even if you don’t think identities matter. That you, ”don’t see color/ability,” that, ”we’re all the same,” it’s still in your best interest to acknowledge all the history and culture and connotations of having minority characters.
