I have a back story to Pearl!Rimmer now
In the Red Dwarf universe, Holograms are sentient computer downloads of people, they are real, but also not real. They are who they are and copies of who they are.
In my new cute head cannon, pearls are also Holograms. But *fancy* Holograms, they are both bought and rewarded, they are a status symbols AND carry your stuff. Pearls are not based of people, they are just...kinda like 3d excel spreadsheets. They are hyper customizable, but not "real". They are an Ai inventory/personal assistant.
Holly wanted to keep Lister sane, so s/he chose Rimmer cause it was easy. But because of s/his space dementia s/he forgot what Pearls were, s/he saw "Pearl" and "Hologram" in the same line of code and thought , "Ohhh, that looks fancy!"
And in s/his mistake, s/he created a Pearl Rimmer. Now Rimmer is alive as not only a hologram, but as an object. Pearls are property, Pearls are *owned*. Now Rimmer is owned by the JMC. He is property. He is a living storage unit, but technically above those still alive.
He was groomed by his family to be somebody. Now they are long dead and he is the fanciest of Pearls.
Rimmer is already complex on top of complex, but now he is a Pearl.
