Headcanon: If Roy tried to use a tablet, he’d burn it in frustration

We all this is what our brilliant Flame Alchemist would do.

I laugh at the image of Roy getting frustrated at technology. I think we all have our moments when technology doesn’t cooperate and we get furious. Doesn’t matter how good with tech we are. There will always be some point of breaking that’s so damn frustrating we lose our temper. So there HAS to have been some point where Roy’s gotten angry at his tablet. Roy, losing his temper, HOPEFULLY hasn’t resulted in costly damages and the misuse of Flame Alchemy…………..

Related note: I find it hilarious that fandom seems to have a collective headcanon that modern!Roy would be confused about younger generational things, like memes or social media or technology or the like. (At least, that’s what I see in the circles I follow?) Now, I certainly can see Roy not being the most involved with social media and these sorts of spheres. However, if we’re imagining a 29 or 30 year old Mustang in the Year of Our Lord 2018… that makes him a millennial, just a few years older than you and me. And lots of people in our cohort are rather up-to-date on social media and memes and slang and internet things and youth culture.

I mean, if we’re putting Roy as a millennial and Ed as a Gen Z / Centennial (gosh, that feels **SO WEIRD** to type), there is going to be generational gap. Of course there is. And Roy not being as active on social media will exacerbate differences and generational understanding. He’s not as internet slang savvy as someone like me, who lives and breathes tumblr, is going to be. But he won’t be unexposed to Gen Z material, etc. Point being: Roy might have a few moments of “wtf?” with the Elrics and their internet exposure and latest slang, but I don’t think anywhere near what fanon gives him (as hysterical as it is).

Roy probably remembers the days when Charlie the Unicorn went rampant he hates Charlie the Unicorn, or when Albino Black Sheep had its heyday with the Llama Song. He would’ve been finishing high school when “They’re Taking the Hobbits to Isengard” hit. He’ll NEVER admit it, but he might be able to sing parts of “Trogdor the Burninator.” I can’t see Roy being DEEP into all parts of internet culture… he probably never picked up what “lemons” means for instance… but he would’ve been there, lived that, done that, fo sho. Ed and Al might be watching the latest weird meme that Mustang hasn’t picked onto yet, but he’ll have gone through more than his own youthful… internet… adventures… XD

Roy won’t be as familiar with the “classic vines” we all still blog, even after vine has closed down. He might not know what “yeet” means at first. But he’ll be quick enough to catch on once he hears “yeet” used in several contexts. He might look it up online (he knows urban dictionary) after the Elrics say some baffling things with the word “yeet.” He might even shock the Elrics when Al says, “Rebecca it’s not what you think,” and before Ed can respond, Mustang mumbles around his coffee, “I won’t hesitate bitch.”

I crack up at all the Roy-lost-with-young-people jokes. They’re hilarious, seeing Roy completely confused at what younger characters like Ed, Al, Ling, and Winry are talking about. There’s SOME truth there. BUT COME ON GUYS HE’S JUST BARELY LEAVING HIS 20s!!! He’s not that old!

And even with his military-oriented focuses, he’s someone well-integrated with society and its trends. He knows how the world works. He’s brilliant but he’s also a socially smart cookie. Roy would’ve been on the internet when it started becoming a Thing and he would have seen the early memes and viral videos and what have you. He still would know what’s up even at 29 or 30. He’d still be on the internet regularly. Instead of Roy lost with younger generational things, I raise you: Roy who KNOWS the Old Classic Viral Shit.

But yeah. Tangent aside. I’m sure there’s still a day the tablet malfunctions and that Flame Alchemy starts to feel tempting. XD

Hi! Can I like, recommend and awesome book series? I'm really trying to help our tumblr fandom grow because we have literally 6 accounts and I'm 2 of them. It seems like something you'd like, given you like HTTYD. And I'm not trying to advertise either, please don't think badly of me. Recommendations are cool! Why would I think badly of someone for speaking of something they love to read? Especially for someone so thoughtful to know I might not read them riiiight away with grad school. But I’ll add them to my “to read” list. XD Thank you very much! :)

I really do. I love it. While The Big Bang Theory might get on some peoples’ bad sides on how it portrays stereotypes, etc., and I really understand why, I find enjoyment in how it displays and parodies overall nerd and geek culture. My irl friends and I have actually done many of the things shown in the television series... down to deeply debating dumb obscurities of superhero bodily functions or taking restaurant ketchup bottles and reenacting The Lord of the Rings with them (I think I nearly died the first time I saw that episode because what are the odds).

I will say, however, I am worried with the number of friends who have come up to me and compared me to Sheldon... I’m not that bad, am I?
