I’m not explicitly trying to be that guy, but when someone describes a love interest whose [objectively small total amount of] screen time has largely featured them being kind of insensitive and disinterested in/dismissive of the character they’re paired up with as a “partner that prioritizes and cares so much [for said character]” I can’t help but be curious of what string theory gymnastics led to such a conclusion.

Like, my own shipping goggles aside, I’m legitimately wondering where those descriptors can be found in the actual narrative?? No hate, just pure confusion, fam.

Dorian Gray Isn't About Youth

One of the greatest misreadings of a text I've seen is the widespread belief that Dorian Gray is about the pursuit of eternal youth. I know that's always how it's framed - a young man sees the beauty of his portrait and wishes to always look like this, so the picture carries all the signs of age, while he remains as youthful as ever.

But it's not about youth and age - it's about innocence and corruption. He doesn't wish to be young, he wishes to be pristine. He preserves himself because he knows he'll never be that innocent and pure ever again. After that everything he does is reflected on the portrait, rather than on his body. His actions should add up - he ends up doing so many cruel, evil things that, surely, he must be rotting inside and out. But all of this is remains hidden in the picture, while giving him the appearance of boyish innocence.

The premise of the story supposes that evil leaves an obvious physical mark on the person - and you might find this a bit naive. Because it is naive. It's a fantasy and the alternative is acknowledging that beauty can hide corruption. So, the picture is a representation of the real fear that under a pristine, innocent exterior, one can find unfathomable cruelty and evil.
