In a Moroccan hotel, a young woman decides to commit suicide. As an alternative, a British secret agent manages to convince her to accept a daring mission.

SYNOPSIS

Hilary Craven, a forsaken wife and grieving mother, is about to commit suicide at a Moroccan hotel when British secret agent Jessop asks her to take part in a perilous mission instead of taking an overdose of sleeping pills. She undertakes the duty of impersonating a dying lady in order to locate the woman's husband, Thomas Betterton, a nuclear physicist who has vanished and may have defected to the Soviet Union. She soon finds herself among a group of passengers being carried to the title's unnamed location.

The destination turns out to be a secret scientific research facility camouflaged as a contemporary leper colony and leprosy research centre in the Atlas Mountains. Mr. Aristides, who is enormously wealthy, created the institution and enticed the world's brightest young scientists to work there so that he may subsequently sell their skills back to the world's governments and companies for a big profit after removing the scientists' opposition through lobotomies. When government officials and other outsiders come, the scientists are not permitted to leave the facility and are kept in secret quarters deep within the mountain.

Hilary Craven successfully disguises herself as Betterton's wife Olive since he is unhappy and badly wants to flee. She falls in love with Andrew Peters, an attractive young American she met on their route to the facility. Jessop finally locates and rescues her and the others trapped there, with the aid of Peters, who turns out to be a secret agent and the cousin of Betterton's first wife Elsa, whom Betterton had murdered. Betterton has been jailed, Craven no longer wishes to die, and she and Peters can begin their lives together.

CHARACTER ANALYSIS

Olive Betterton is the most intriguing character. Thomas Betterton's second wife appears briefly in two chapters of the book. Jessop informs her of her husband's absence at the start. Hillary Craven pays her a visit on her deathbed in a later chapter.Mrs. Betterton's history is unknown; neither her maiden name nor her life before to marriage. It's also unclear how she meets Tom. Readers are aware that her spouse vanished eighteen months after their wedding and Tom's rapid rise as an inventor. The nature of their marriage may pique your interest. For starters, it happens soon after Tom's first wife, Elsa, dies. Second, Olive's ignorance about her spouse – – or, more likely, an intentional attempt to conceal his identity. Third, his unusual behavior previous to his "kidnapping" when meeting with the late Elsa's coworker. It’s unclear how much Olive knows about Tom's disappearance. As a result, her interview with Jessop at the start gives key clues as to who she is. Jessop has the following impression of her: 'Women suffering from extreme sadness and worry, in his experience, did not disregard their make-up.' They tried their hardest to restore the scars that sadness had caused in their appearance. He wondered whether Mrs. Betterton had avoided wearing make-up in order to play the preoccupied wife.'

It's unclear how much Olive knows about Tom's disappearance. As a result, her interview with Jessop at the start gives key clues as to who she is. Jessop has the following impression of her: 'Women suffering from extreme sadness and worry, in his experience, did not disregard their make-up.' If Jessop was correct, what did she strive to hide? And why is that? Olive Betterton's character dies after being seriously injured in an aircraft disaster. I'm curious what would happen if Olive Betterton was permitted to live.

I started to write before I became a mom and I pushed it off for so long. I love writing my short stories on my tumblr page. I have a pretty good audience. Ofcourse it’s for adults. I have been doing a lot lately aside from being a mom. I have started my novel, got a second job on top of my new job. And I’m hoping to have my car next month! I feel like things are finally falling into place. But it’s always a calm before a storm…
