Blood & Water
There's this fanfic called "The Beast You've Made Me" on ao3 by @iwantacoffee19 (It's spamtenna :D )
Spoilers for chapter 8:
You know the two paintings the pair do of eachother? Well I drew em
Here's Tenna's:
I like this one better! I was most hyped for drawing this one
And here's Spamton's:
Im not sure if its that accurate haha. I don't really know how to draw this Tenna, but neither does Spammy so it works
False Life. Big new trick Occtis pulled out during his leveling up scene. Extremely cool necromantic blood magic happening about it. But I know I’ve heard the phrase before.
Waaaaay back in the Overture, when Occtis, Teor and Azune were looking for Thimble.
“You see me do something that you probably didn’t see me do while in our time in the Falconer’s Rebellion. I have a necklace around me with a small child’s bracelet hanging from it. I close my eyes and I reach towards it, I touch it, and I whisper: I’m not alone. In my mind’s eye, I see a spectral form step out from me and then take a defensive stance and then dissipate as I cast False Life.”
And again, as they reach the threshold of the blacked out and strangely bereft-of-corpses massacre site of the Palazzo Davinos:
“With that, I was about to ask if you felt unsafe, but that tells me everything I need to know, and I am casting False Life on myself.”
Azune had this trick locked and loaded from the start of the campaign, if not within his childhood/adolescence in the Falconer’s Rebellion. Interesting skill to pick up, and extra interesting to see it added to Occtis’ cache during his jump to the next level. Being a DnD novice, I went to look up the exact rules for the thing. And:
A necromantic spell, available to a lot of classes across the board, including the two we’ve seen put it in action so far. A sorcerer (Azune) and a wizard (Occtis). But the fact that it is something out of the school of necromancy, especially in the context of Aramán’s whole situation, is very !!! to me.
Push further. Back at the palazzo, the encounter with the remains of that strange black candle Primus Tachonis used for a ritual requiring Circle of Death.
This is powerful necromancy. You realize it's a material component of a spell that was supposed to make this world not only coterminous, but this was supposed to shred violently the fabric between the world of Aramán and the realm of death beyond.
“Azune,” from Bolaire.
“Yes?”
“What do you suppose would happen if we Mended this?”
“I don't know if I would do that if I were you. I mean, I actually don't—,” from Murray.
“Elaborate.”
“I don't know if anything would happen. This is just a singular component likely used in a larger ritual where you would probably need other components, but I am getting some very intense necromantic energy from this.”
[…]
You have mentioned Mending that wax to see what it originally was. It's the only way, it's the only-- This place is so picked clean that it is a source of true fear that it is this clean. The only clue you have is this little bit of melted wax and a Mending might give you some insight into it, but, as you said, it was a powerful material component of something necromantic and foul.
“I'll take the candle so we're closer to each other, and I will conjure that magic and I will cast Mending on that candle.”
Does Azune know the meaning of the words in the verbal component for Mending?
“Some. It's like a translation of something that he's a few steps removed from.”
You say a word that you just know. It was handed down to you. It's just as natural as anything else. You speak the word, on nat 20 perception, and the residual Comprehend Languages from earlier. [Hal doesn't] even know what language Azune is speaking, but [he] knows the exact meaning of the word he says. Mending. But you can mend things that you don't even know what they are, so what does that mean? How are you fixing it if you don't know what it was? Because you don't have to know. The word you say is "remember," and the candle remembers what it was.
(Is that. A good thing? Brennan says it was the 'only way' to learn anything, but... Hmm. What does it mean to remind this specific candle of what it was, what it's meant to do? Should it have been that easy for anyone to make that happen?)
It comes back, and on a nat 20 perception, Hal, you and you alone hear. You hear a fox's footprints, when that candle comes back, races past you, out the door towards the gate, following people you need to find.
A good thing! No ghouls, no ghosts, no horror! Just a little undead fox. That reassembled itself and skittered away, out the door. Before Occtis Tachonis existed in the Material Plane. Meaning the candle did do something when Azune returned it to itself. But how? Why? Or else the spell of Mend (Remember) reached past the candle and into the last corpse remaining on the grounds who might respond to it--because what would the Tachonises want with a disassembled fox carcass? And if that's the case, if the candle or the Mending made it happen, what the fuck does that mean for Azune's abilities?
Thinking about the materials brought up in Tannesar. Ossement and Calcidion. Calcidion sounds close to calcium, calcium goes to bones, and could make for a good shorthand for celestial skeletal components. Easy enough jump, ties in with the Stone of Nightsong coming from a chunk of angel rib. But Ossement also leans on that meaning and then some. The literal definition of ‘osseous’ is an adjective for bony. So one or both of these materials have at least something to do with skeletons. But Calcidion, calcium…
What about the element itself? Or its offshoots? If we hit up the wiki, calcium stearate is a white waxy powder with a lot of applications. One of which is being a potential ingredient in candle making.
tl;dr: Azune. My friend. My sunset-eyed sad man.
What are you doing walking around with False Life to begin with? How did that trick get added to your list, presumably after the Falconer’s Rebellion?
Should you have been able to put Primus’ magic fuckoff necro-ritual candle back together with just a word? How did your spell on said candle do a casual necromancy on a dead familiar before the actual necromancer it belongs to even made it back into existence?
Do you have that candle safely stored away someplace where no Tachonises can reclaim it or connect dots as to who just conjured it back into existence willy-nilly, especially when it might be made of very rare and dangerous elements that House Tachonis needs for its evil necrofuckery? I need you to say yes.
A gentle reminder:
Please do not make assumptions about my marriage or my boundaries based on what you see me post online or what you think my marriage or boundaries should be.
My husband is fully aware of my involvement in this community, everything that I do, and the content I share and reblog. We communicate openly, and I have no interest in hiding things or living a double life.
You don’t have to understand our relationship, but I do ask that you respect it. Anonymous messages accusing me of being dishonest or sneaking around behind my husband’s back aren’t cool—they’re simply based on assumptions that aren’t true.
Let’s normalize not projecting our own expectations onto other people’s relationships. Thank you. ❤️
Anatole has successfully been apprehended and let back outside in the sun! :D he was even nice enough to pose for a photo!
(Please do not judge me, that was my only bit of free paper nearby- xD)
Thus ends the saga of Anatole in the Giant's house! Without any injury! :D and now we can test to see if he comes back, but it seems unlikely. Thank you for your tips, everyone! ^^ we did it! :D
Ew. Who are these losers ???
