Flag of Bhutan
Aspect Ratio 2:3
The current flag of Bhutan was adopted in 1969. Despite Bhutan never having been colonized in it's history, and it's current government taking power in 1907, the nation did not have a flag until 1949. It was during this year that Jigme Wangchuk purportedly requested one be created. None of the original flags or any documentation are known to still exist, but it is said to feature a green Druk (the central dragon), red instead of orange, and was "square" shaped. In 1956 the color of the Druk was changed to white. In 1969 the proportions were changed to 2:3, in accordance with the flag of India and the orange color replaced the red. The Druk is a Thunder Dragon in Bhutanese myth and the white color represents purity of thought and deeds shared by all the people of Bhutan. The jewels the dragon holds symbolize Bhutan's wealth and security. The yellow signifies civil tradition and temporal authority, as embodied in the Druk Gyalpo (Dragon King) of Bhutan. The orange is indicative of Buddhist spiritual tradition, especially the Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma schools.

In Ganzi, Sichuan, China there is the largest Tibetan Buddhist academy in the world. Your Shot photographer Ning Zhang says, “the academy is called Larong Wuming Buddhist Academy which belongs to the Nyingma sect (red sect) of Tibetan Buddhism. Located at 3700m above sea level, there are thousands of monks and nuns living in thousands of red houses doing their spiritual practice there. The density of the houses make an awesome red view.” Photograph by Ning Zhang
